Topic: Heartier windscreens for my AT4053s?

Did my first outdoor show with the new AT's the other night, and I got some wind noise. The wind wasn't too strong, but it was blowing directly onto the left mic, and that's where the bulk of the noise is. I'm not sure how much, if any is on the right channel, but I don't think it really matters. This was with the stock windscreens. Oddly enough (or maybe there's a clear explanation) the shotguns I was running on the same stand with no screens had much less noise.

Can anyone recommend some better windscreens? Windtech 1200? These mics are 21mm. Or do I need to work on my weather control technique?

Add dead rats on top of your wind screens. I got a couple of pairs in the YS here. I can't remember who was making them, but a search should turn that up quick.

on that note, if you are getting wind noise with the big ass shures, i wonder if taping is really in the cards for that day

Does anyone have experience with the Windtech screens vs the stock stuff from Audio Technica?

I've seen people using "rycote softies", that incorporate a rat and windscreen in a single unit.  Not sure how well they work, expensive too, at $100 each approx.

I would probably go with the DPA windscreens and a rat on top of that.  I've got the Shures and don't think they are that great.  I think these are best suited to onstage use, not flying way up in a windstorm.
