Topic: What does cable noise sound like?

Just listening through three sets I taped on Monday night and all seem to have an intermittent (but quite frequent) rumble-type noise. Each episode lasts less than 1sec and looking at the frequency analysis it's mainly 40-80Hz. The sound is almost like the noise you get when you gently blow across a capsule.

Recorded with the same setup in the same room one week before with no issue whatsoever. Just wondering if this might be noise caused by the mic cables moving around during recording.

Rolling off the frequencies below 80Hz seems to make it less noticeable without affecting the music too much.

Any thoughts? I'll try and get a sample posted too.

Could be cable noise or the connection(s) at the end of the cable could be ready to go. Could be debris in the input jack. I've heard cable noises from low rumblings to mid-freq screachings. Have you tried replicating at home using same setup?

I've not tried replicating it yet but it's a good point - I'll have a try this evening.

Were you set-up by any vents?  Maybe the venue turned on the heat that night.

Bingo!  This was my first thought.  Air conditiong/heating vents are not friendly to tapers and I've had a few recordings get hit by this (either because I was forced to set up in a particular spot or had to stand in a particular one).
