chopped mics
« on: December 17, 2011, 08:56:03 PM »
Just curious here, but can any condenser mic bodies be chopped down to an active sized setup?  I was wonderingt if anyone has tried anything with the Peluso cemc6 kit?  Does modifying the bodies effect the sound at all?  I love the mics but am always thinking of size of the rig...

it's possible if you are a skilled circuit designer like Jon.  ;D
Other mics may or may not lend itself to that. The Nak mod is pretty simple compared to others.
The Peluso actives were "maybe a few months away" when I had some 4 years ago.

It is easist for mics with electret capsules.  Even easier if the electrets have their FETs build it.

I've "chopped" a few mics:

AT822.  Electret capsules with built in FET.  I just chopped off the head, inserted a cord and two 4.7k resistors in there.  Connect to Edirol R09 with a miniplug, and works great on plug in power.

AT3021.  Electret capsule, without FET.  I just put a FET from a TSB-120A capsule behind, added  a 4.7k resistor and fixed the back with epoxy putty.

Yes, anything is possible with too much motivation and too little inhibition :).
