Title: Oddity tonight with SD 722
Post by: vegeta_ban on March 07, 2014, 04:56:11 AM
During the first set of JGB in Ardmore, PA tonight my SD722 made a warning sound twice, about a minute apart. When I got home the first track was split into files labeled JGB01.wav, JGB01A.wav, and JGB01B.wav.

I was missing some part of the set, however since I was streaming at the time I can patch the couple seconds with the backup of those mics on the computer (or use my Zoom H6 recordings as extra backup)

I haven't had this happen before, but I am assuming that the warning was a HDD failure. I'm not sure what would cause that; could it just be usage?

Anyway, I have seen people mention sending their sound devices in for checkups, how hard is that process? Or should I just replace the hard drive?

Sorry if I am rambling here.

I'd try formatting the drive and then recording something at home to see if it repeats. Changing out the drive isn't that difficult.

While I'm in there replacing the hard drive, is the AA battery easy to replace? I have to reset the date everytime I turned the 722 on.

Also the second set recorded with no problems.

Yep, it's very easy. You just need to loosen the pcb screw that holds the battery in place.

We have two 722s at work, and I replace the HDs every 2 years or so. I don't know what your symptoms point to, but post on the SD forum or send them an inquiry and I'm sure you'll find out.

Also, I replaced my 722 AA memory batteries with Sanyo/Panasonic Eneloop low self discharge NiMH, and recommend that.

I found a four pack of the nickel metal hydride batteries at Micro Center. Now I'm wondering if this hard drive would work, I have the IDE parallel ATA type of sound devices 722.

Replacing the AA clock battery is super-easy. If I had the tools and time, I could and would do it in the field. I was intimidated at first to open up a piece of gear like a 722. But the swap is super-easy.

Concerning the HDD swap, I'm confident I can "DIY". But I've just been too lazy...

Now that I've done it, I've pried apart laptops of equal value and I probably wouldn't hesitate

That's why I ALWAYS ran a cf card too, just in case that ever happened ;) and now they're cheaper than ever!

I was going to but didn't dump the card I have before the show, only have a 4gb card right now.

I recommend heading over to the 7xx thread on the team boards discussion forum. All of this stuff has been discussed at length in recent weeks over there.

A compact flash adapter card could be a good option if you only have a 4gb CF card.
This will allow you to use much cheaper as cards with higher capacities than CF.
