Connectors for AKG C426 or C34?
« on: December 06, 2010, 10:59:59 PM »
I'm looking to make some adaptors for my AKG mics and I need to find the connectors.  They are Amphenol C091A or C091D 12-pin connectors, I believe.  Anybody have a pair of male and female connectors of this type they'd want to sell me?  Thanks.

I did find a source for these connectors.  Allied Electronics sells them, as well as Digi-Key.  Both the 12-pin C091A and C091D will fit the mics.  The "D" version is watertight and costs a few bucks more.  Since I don't plan on using my mics under water, the "A" connectors should do.  From Allied, they cost about $21 each, plus tax & shipping.

Try a search on eBay. I just found a bunch for much less than the prices you quoted.

I searched eBay, but the only result I found for the 12-pin version of the connector was more expensive than from Allied.  Do you have a link?  Thanks.

Thanks for the link.  I found the same items, and only this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/AMPHENOL-C091A-T-3636-002-NSFP-C091AT3636002-/220677560892?pt=BI_Control_Systems_PLCs&hash=item3361685a3c#ht_824wt_907

is the 12-pin connector.  It is the same price (actually it's a bit more with shipping) as is available from Allied or Digi-Key.

Can you still get these connectors and build a cable? Or buy one new?

The connectors are available from Allied:

http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=2467210 Male
http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=2467211 Female

Even though these are 12-pin connectors, the MK 42/20 cable (used on the C34, C422, C424, and C426 B) uses only 9 pins.  Here are how the various mics use those 9 pins:

C34: 7 pins = 1 gnd + 4 signal + 2 pattern switching
C422, C426 B: 8 pins = 1 gnd + 4 signal + 2 pattern switching + 1 LED
C424: 9 pins = 1 gnd + 8 signal

Finding thin and flexible 8 conductor + shield cable might be difficult.  If you are only interested in building a cable for a C34 you can get away with a 6 conductors + shield.  Such a cable will work with a C422 and C426 B if you don't care about using the LED.

The AKG MK 42/20 cable has been discontinued for some time.  Perhaps there are NOS sources in Europe?  Or, perhaps one of the custom cable builders around here could make you one.  A problem with the MK 42/20 is that it's 20 m long, which is often way too long.  So if you build a cable yourself you could make it a more reasonable length.

I had one made by a guy in Europe (the one who checked my mic and gave it a clean bill of health). It wasn't cheap, but the nuke quality is better than the original cable.
