thanks to all who have replied so far... i think i am going to probably try out a SD MP-2 for now...  i am basing this primarly on a) cost - about half of the psp-2/sx-m2/aerco MP-2 and b) gain - seems to be smoother then the other pres which have stepped gain.

worse case, i dont really like the combo and get something else, right??  ;D

b) gain - seems to be smoother then the other pres which have stepped gain.

FWIW, the older Aerco MP2 had stepped gain.  The new models can be made with variable gain.

Good luck with the SD MP-2

thanks...  i had seen that the varible gain was an option, but $750 is about twice what i want to spend on this toy.  hell, if i was gonna throw some money around, i would just toss another couple hundred in the had and get my v3. i do look forward to hearing hammerhorror's mod 460>aerco mp-2

Have you thought about this one?

The Beachtek DXA-10?   http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=55071  (has a pictorial of my setup as well)

It's a cheaper and smaller, runs on DC power but you WILL need some type of remote power to go more than 1 hour phantom (I haven't done any testing with just a 9V w/ PP). Maybe a lithium 9V would go more than 1 hour PP but like I said, I haven't done any testing.  It's been real good to my AT853s (SP PP mod).

Gain and PP, what else do you need?  ;D  Nothing fancy but it does the trick and I have had none of the problems I had with the Boost Box (bass, brickwalling, etc).

It's not in the same league as the others but worth a consideration.

Here's the Beachtek link:   http://beachtek.com/dxa10.html

It's on BH Photo for around $260.  You will need a custom battery connection to replace the 9v battery carriage but it can easily be done (so I have been told  ;))
It seems to me what you lose in mystery, you gain in awe.  Sir Francis Crick
