best preamp for large diaphram mics
« on: March 22, 2006, 05:38:53 PM »
i'm looking for the best preamp i can find for LD mics that is under $800.  it doesn't have to have A/D, but it can.  after i save for a while, i am going to sell my Audix m1290s and get a pair of LDs, probably the C3's + a nice preamp.

for now it would be:
C3's > Preamp > MT2496
and in the future could be:
C3's > Preamp > A/D > MT2496

pretty much if I want to run omnis at all I have to buy the C3's.  LSD2 won't work for split omnis or a J-disc.

what do people think about the A/D on the edirol?

the a/d on the edirol ua5 is quite good, imo.
I'll 2nd the transparent preamp suggestion.  you dont want "warm and/or thick" sounding electronics behind the LDs.
I'll also 2nd the LSD suggestion.  you'll make better recordings w/it.
:)

i seem to be leaning towards the T+ UA-5 because of the transparency + good A/D for the same price as a transparent preamp.

however, i don't think i'm going to go for the LSD2 because I wouldn't be able to run omnis (either split or J-disc).

as you may already know, Busman does some sweet mods on his ua5s and they appear to be very transparent.  It sounds very good with my LDs, fwiw.  That route may save you a little cash that you could put towards some mics.

I may be selling my busman modded UA-5 (bm2p+)  let me know if you're interested. Rivals the T+ mod.

theres not any best preamp for LD mics. One thing you see with every audio community is that opinions are all over the place...LDs , are so different , sonically, from one mic to the next...one combination might sing and the next one suck.  I love running my m930s and u87s through my pendulum, which is tube, and "warm" but I love how it sounds!..only you can be the judge of what sounds best to you.

or you could get a pre like this:

and switch back and forth between SS and Tube till you get what you want to hear.  ;D dont worry, its DC Ready! ;D

Another vote for the Busman mods
I love how my ADK A51S's (and now SP C3's) sound through my bm2p+ !
I agree with spyder I will be holding onto mine for a long time.
But as Teddy says it's all up to your ear.
