What Sample/bit setting....light on or off...LED brightness?
These things all affect the power consumption of the 722.
If we're going to compare battery run times, we need to have a standard for everyone to use to compare their batts.
I suggest this:
Sample / bit 96/24
light on
meter LEDs dimmest setting
phantom on
mediia: HDD
unit actually recording with some input signal
If we all use the same parameters for testing, the comparisons will have more meaning.
-
mitch used basically what you said in your post ran levels at peak and had headphones with volume polus 10 attached
24/96
and lights on 100%
-
there is not gonna be any standard unless we all use the same mics, every mic uses more current, the 480's are rated a 2ma, the 414's are 4ma, so thats half the life of the battery right there

Bean wins!!!

cool, i believe the 480/460 both suck down 2ma, so that means i will get pretty decent runtimes as well :)
i used to get 10 hrs easily going 480>v3(phantom/ansr/aes and spdif active/etc) going into my v3 :)

wow! i don't want to sound like negative nancy but those runtimes seem unreal. i know most people were getting around 5-6 hours with the 6000mAh batteries. i was getting 6 1/2 or so in really hot coniditions this weekend running line in. i need to run some similar tests to verify.
-
possible the batt ran forever since it was only recording silence?!?
-
anyone done any playback tests for battery life?
i would think it would get much better run times playing back as opposed to recording but found that the playback I have done drains the battery almost as quickly. just curious if anyone has done any actual tests.

i'll posdt mine in a short while, i tested out a 6000mah battery last nite, gonna do another test w/ it tonight, thewn the next two days im gonna test a 6800mah one i got
-
i got about 6.5 hrs on my 722 running mic-in, low gain, phantom on, BUT i didnt have the backlight on most of the time, im running the test again now w/ backlight on to see :) and levels were set to near-concert levels :)
and FWIW, this is w/ a 6000mah battery

Hi Nate,
We recently ran some tests with the Sony NP-F970 battery (6600 mAh) with great results. Powering one condenser microphone while recording to the hard drive, the Sony battery achieved a total of 7 hours of continuous record time when fully charged.

so is it better to leave the 722 lion batts on the charger ala an sla, or to take it off the charger after its charged?
-
also, shouldnt a 6800mah battery be bigger in physical size than a 6000mah one?
reason i ask is, i got a 6000mah one w/ my 722, and its stamped on the back that its 6000mah, well then i ordered a 6800mah supposedly off of ebay for only 26 shipped and its not stamped 6800mah anywhere and its the same physical size as my 6000mah one ???
was that just a sales pitch ?
still not bitching, i can easily get 6-6.5 hrs from a 6000mah one, and for 26 shipped, thats a great deal IMO
-
i have a question for you 722 folks:
ok, here goes, my smaller batteries for the 722, i have a 1850mah, and 3000mah and a 4600mah and they all lock into the lion battery slot, however when i place my 6000mah and my 6800mah batteries into the lion slot, they dont 'lock' in, i can remove them w/ out depressing the locking pin
does anyone else have this same 'problem' ???
i couldve sworm they locked in before, but i could def be wrong since its hard to see that locking pin, i always just pushed a pen at it and removed the battery
anyone?
-
ALL my batteries lock into the 722.
I don't see how the batt. wouldn't lock, unless it was not fully plugged in.

actually, its just one of my bigger ones, the 6000mah one, quite weird actually
-
If the batt. is not allowing the lock pin to pop up, maybe you can file the plastic batt. case to remove just enough plastic to allow the pin to pop up.
BTW...were you recording at 96/24 during your batt. tests?
Mitch

yep, 2496, im running tests now w/ the backilight OFF, just the lcd's going on the meters
-
My large battery no longer locks in also. It did when I first got it but after a few shows it doesnt anymore. I guess it expanded from the heat of charging or running 5hrs under the 722.

this is weird, ive been cycling my 6000mah batteries and the first 2 times i ran each of them, i got 6+ hrs, now that ive cycled them a few times, ive only gotten 4+ hrs going phantom to 480's/backlight off/lcd on lowest/writing to the HD ???
WTF?
i got more time when i ran backlight on w/ them ???
im gonna keep trying, and fwiw, the batts are 970 ones off of ebay

nice! just scored a brand new genuine sony np-f970 (6600mAh) on ebay for $43 shipped

ive seen alot of those on ebay, but do you really think theyre worth 2x the money over the generic ones ??? my generic 6000mah ones hold a charge quite well, ive been getting 6.5 hrs off of one w/ phantom on, backlight off, 24/96, and writing to the 40GB HD
im running more batt tests now just to see constant runtimes
FWIW, i think cycling the batts about 6 times is what its all about, you HAVE TO cycle the batts at least 4 times for them to maintain charges, ive done my fair share of lion studying and this is the most common point to keeping your lion batts for a long time and holding steady charges
if so, im gonna start buying the genuine sony ones :)
-
first off these are higher capacity 6600 vs 6000.
the main reason I've stuck with the genuine because of quality - read too many posts and even had one generic have the little female ends that the pins go into come out while swapping. for me the extra $20 is well worth the piece of mind (and the extra 600 mAh)

agreed.
i had some of the cheaper ones and one wouldnt charge, the other had the pins slide out just as mentioned.
Cascade was cool and exchanged, but it was a royal PITA.
with all the thousands we spend on gear, what's another 20 bucks to be sure we have solid power that we know wont fail on us at the wrong time...
-
FWIW I believe Frank no longer deals with the generic ones anymore because of QC issues (correct me if I'm wrong)

i have been buying supposedly 6800mah ones but they last just about the same as the 6000 generic ones and also are the same physical size as the 6000mah ones, so therefor i think the 6800mah ones are really 6000mah ones
are your 6600mah ones physically bigger than the 6000mah ones ???
is there a nice charger that tells the mah capacity ???

really?
looks like im not buying anymore cheapie ones then, SS sent me a generic 6000mah one and i bought a 6800 generic one and the stock one that came w/ my 722 is a 4600mah one, and it also seems to be generic, so if SD is sending generic ones, dont you think theyre good enough?first off these are higher capacity 6600 vs 6000.

i agree w/ you tho, after spending 2400 on the 722, whats 20 more dollars per battery?
also, what charger are ya'll using? just the 722?
i have a lenmar duo charger that teddy sent me w/ the portabrace purchase that charges two at a time, the 722 charger and the charger SS sent me w/ the 722, i believe its a generic charger as well
have you two been unplugging/replugging the the 722 back in once its charged? it seems to charge for another 20 minutes ort so topping the bigger batteries off when using the 722 to charge them
-
ive got the dual lenmar charger too
yes, really. dont go w/ the generic ones
as w/ anything in life you get what you pay for
(IE: Akg's vs Schoeps) ;) ;) ;) :P

you are correct, sir

nice! just scored a brand new genuine sony np-f970 (6600mAh) on ebay for $43 shipped
yinz got a link to those great deals on the sony 970's ??? everyone i see on ebay is like 45 plus 16 shipping on an item that weighs about 12oz :P
-
nevermind, i found a few that were 25 on bids and only 18.00 shipping :P
why the hell do they want so much to ship ???
i bid 25.99 on one and w/ 18.00 shipping, thats still only 45 dollars for the quality 6600mah sony ones so......
id feel better knowing i have quality batts for this expensive recorder :P
i still cant blieve you spen 2400 on a recorder(722) and have to buy a 15 dollar firewire cable :P i mean WTF?
i bought nice belkin 12ft firewire cable so transfers dont have to be done RIGHT near my comp, shich is sweet ;D

Where's the bluetooth! ;D
-
i haven't held a generic and genuine sony side by side but I borrowed a couple generics that Ian had for Wakarusa and I think they were slightly smaller than my 6600 ones.
you just gotta keep checking ebay, i've scored 2 or 3 off of ebay now and they were all around 45-60 shipped. a lot of people will do a high shipping charge so their item appears to sell for cheaper. i don't think ebay takes a cut of shipping charges either.

Wireless short range file transfer (lots of cell phones have it now). It's slow though, not feasible for stuff like this - I was kidding. ;)

im sure you're on top of it bean - but double check on where the company is located or where they are shipping from - there seems to be a ot of sellers with these batteries based in Honk Kong or other parts of China

im on it ;D
they are shipping from NY and shipping is only 1499 ;D so 40 dollars isnt bad shipped ;D
-
FWIW.. Neutrik told me that have big trouble with counterfeit speaker cables on ebay. Most of the Tiffany stuff on ebay was fake until ebay was sued for not doing much about it.
I've had great luck with my generics but will buy sony when I replace them.. Just not sure from where.
-
so are yinz still using your stock 4600mah generic batts that came w/ the 722 ??? what about the 6000mah ones that came w/ your 722 ???
i have to buy 3 or so more of the good sony 6000mah batts, and then i'll be selling off my generic 6800mah ones, and once theyre cycled taboot ;D
-
im having runtime problems w/ a generic 6800mah one i scored off of ebay, i have cycled it 3 or so times already and cant get more than 4-4.5 hrs out of it, thats with phantom on/backlight off/leds on lowest setting/and writing to the HD ONLY
i guess it did take my 6000mah one that came w/ the 722 about 3-4 cycles to maintain a 6.5 hr runtime but WTF ??? this thing is worrying me
once i get 3 more sony 6600mah ones i'll be selling these generics off anyway, and they'll already be cycled and everything :)
i think 4 x 6600 mah sony batts and a 4600mah batt should get me thru about any festie
im gonna try recording at 24/48 and see if i get much better runtimes that way
any info on other folks runtimes would be great, and also what style of batts you all are using
id ideally like to use the sony 6600mah batts and leave the backlight ON most of the time, but if i can get consistent 6 hrs of runtime w/ the backlight on, i guerss im gonna have to leave it off :P
oh and ive only recorded two shows with the 722 and LOVE IT, ive had it basically running for 2 weeks straight doing batt runtime tests, and the damn thing is a tapers dream, so easy to use and you can start recording w/ in about 5 secs from OFF>ON>RECORDING
cant wait for the two moe shows im doing next weekend too ;D
-
ok folks, so my 6800mah battery STILL wont condidtion/cycle and maintain a full charge for 6+ hrs like the otehr one
i talked to mojan at SS and she said if the lions sit on the shelf for longer than a few months, that is what happens :'( they dont condidtion well at alla nd lose teir ability to hold a good charge, and after this issues im having w/ this batt, i believe her 100%
so hopefully these genuine sony ones dont have this problem, otherwise, i'll be moving to 12v NIMH external power :(
-
the genuine sony I got off of ebay arrived this weekend, but appears to be DOA - hopefully the seller will resolve this properly with me
-
the genuine sony I got off of ebay arrived this weekend, but appears to be DOA - hopefully the seller will resolve this properly with me
damnit, that sucks, who'd you order it from? i got mine from photoshopmall or something like that
i may just keep getting mine thru SS
-
shopatmall
they've got a 7 day return policy so hopefully they'll take care of it
-
The three 6000mAh packs I have from battery bank are all solid performers
The only issue is that when I run them in the sun (like Bonaroo) they get so hot that the female terminals want to stay on the male terminals and they slide out of the shell. If you know to expect that, recovery is pretty easy but I think a speck of superglue would fix it.
-

Same here. My 6800maH only gets around 3hours now, and my
4600maH won't even take a charge and is totally dead. I got
4 hours with the 4600maH on the first run. If I could
consistently get 3 or 4 hours on the 4600maH, it would be
perfect, as I like the size better for stealthing.
-
okay, so i picked up a new Sony NP-F970 off eBay, plug it into the 722, and it doesn't appear to push all the way in, though i still need to push in the release button to get the battery out. i assume it's making contact and it appears to be charging properly, yet after it's been "charged" i remove the power cord, press the On button, and i get nothing. No juice, no nothing. the only way to get this Sony battery to "come alive" is by plugging the AC adapter in, turning the 722 on, then removing the AC adapter on the fly, where the battery finally kicks in.
anyone else experience weird behavior such as this? or might i have a beat battery? at this point i'm not confident in this battery at all :-\
thanks.
-
also, the lions MUST be cycled, otherwise they die QUICKLY
-
Okay, looks like I found my problem. A friend who owns a Sony camcorder brought it to work yesterday along with his NP-F960 battery, and I brought in my 722 and NP-F970 battery.
Plugged my NP-F970 into the camcorder and voila, it slid right onto the contacts, clicking into place, and the unit powered right up, no problem. Grabbed his NP-F960 and slid it onto the 722 and "click"...full contact with the 722's terminals, covering them completely as they should, with the release button fully up and...lo & behold, the 722 powered right up.
I took both batteries and placed them side by side, contacts up, and noticed the wells on one looked deeper than the other. Grabbed a toothpick and placed it (gently) into the contact wells of each battery, and what did I find? The 960 wells are 4/16" deep, the 970 wells are 3/16" deep, therefore the lack of full contact on the 722 with the NP-F970. How about that?
So, at this point I am looking to cut my losses as I'm past the 7-day return period so I ask my pal if he'd be up for a battery trade and he was. He gets a higher-capacity Sony battery for his camcorder and I get a Sony battery that while not as high in capacity, gives me peace of mind and a working battery, so we both win.
I just wonder if this is a known problem on all NP-F970's? I was tempted to push the wells in to see if they'd go deeper but didn't want to risk puncturing the well bottom.
Anyway, just wanted to share this for the record in case anyone else has the same, or a similar, problem.

i exclusively use the genuine np-f970's and with the exception of one dud i got on eBay that wouldn't take a charge I have had Zero problems with them fitting properly
-
also, the lions MUST be cycled, otherwise they die QUICKLY
i have read otherwise about Li-ion batteries - i thought that li-ion batteries were immune to memory effect and don't need to be conditioned/cycled, can anyone else chime in on this?

consider yourself fortunate! :)

FWIW, the genuine npf-970 i got on ebay has worked out GREAT in batt runtimes, running line in from the v3/no backlight/headphones ON/writing ONLY to the HD/2496 i get about 9 solid hours, so thats whats up ;D
