MiniDisc or Nomad?
« on: March 08, 2004, 02:22:02 AM »
I just tape this local band with some Giant Squids mics, and am currently running it into my Sony MZ-NF610, but I don't have the means for a digital conversion of my MiniDiscs, so there's a little analog sound on all my tapes.  I was just wondering if the Nomad is easy to convert recordings digitally, and whether people like it more or less than MD.  Thanks!

I don't have any hands on experience, but the Nomad is much easier to transfer.  It's just a USB connection and then drag and drop it over.  If you want to pick up a sony MZ-1 on ebay to convert digitally you could go that route, but you'll want to avoid Creative soundcards.  Also, if you record with the Nomad, you obviously won't have the lossy compression.

go with the jb3, for all the reasons agent 007 posted, as well as others.

if you stick with the MD, you will have to buy a new MD unit and a soundcard.

Connor!! Welcome bro! Yeah, for as much as I love MD, I'd have to say go with the JB3. Transfers will be perfect, and think - no need to buy media!

If you want any help transfering some MDs to CDR digitally, let me know. Hell, I'll bring the stuff to do it at Dead Creek if you want.

il throw another vote in for the jb3. ive used both for extended amounts of time in the past, and the jb3 just blows away minidisc.

jb3, you can also transfer via firewire.  also as your rig grows the jb3 will be able to keep up with it by recording wav files.  i don't think the md can record wav yet.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.  $179 is totally in my price range, so I think I'll go for it soon.  The only other question I have is how big it is (like, compared to the size of a MiniDisc).  I can't really tell from the pictures, but I'll be using this for practical purposes (i.e. mp3's, listen to while I work out, etc), as well as taping (possibly stealth for some shows as well).

Yeah, NJB3...  Better than even HiMD...  And its the size of a portable Discman.

you'll want to avoid Creative soundcards.

Now this is something i've been meanin to ask, bein that i do analog transfers from muh MD and am constantly shitted by mild amounts of analog hiss.

I've got a Creative Live! Series (WDM) soundcard and it does me fairly well, but what disadvantages do the creative soundcards have, and whats a good (yet not too expensive) step up in the world?

It's been a while, but I'm 99% positive that Creative sound cards are NOT bit accurate.  But if you have one of those, I would think that if you have a way to ouput MD digitally, then using the digital in on the Live! would be better than analog.  As for a reccomendation I have no idea.  I'm sure someone else will come along with some :).

I started with MD, moved up to JB3 last year.  It's a world of difference if you ask me...so much nicer.
studio projects c4 > edirol ua-5 [digi mod] > Microtrack II
