What do you think of these Oktavas ?
« on: March 13, 2004, 02:34:32 PM »
I'm looking to get some good sounding mics but I can't afford a bunch of $ right now.  I found these Oktavas what do you think of them.
Oktava MK012

$255 for a matched pair.

Oktava MK319

$99 each
And some others

Nady SCM900

$79.99
ADK Package Anyone ever hear of Generis mics?

$99

I really like the matched Oktava's MK012 I hear they are good mics.

I'd ask for some sort of proof that they are really matched. Otherwise you might as well wait for them to go on sale at GC again.

If size/stealth isn't an issue I'd look at a pair of ADK a-51s.   They are really nice sounding mics for the price!

Generis is somehow a part of ADK...though I don't know exactly what the difference is (if there is one).

If those mk012's really are matched that's not a bad price.  If you want something for less $ and is going to be stealthable look at www.soundprofessionals.com

Get the ADKs.  If size is a problem, get ADK SCs.  They are as costly as those Oktavas (unless you get The Deal at GC) and they are much better...

Of course, I'm biased...

How can I tell if it is a true matched pair? Are the serial numbers in order? example 1234 & 1235

serial numbers in order doesn't neccesarily mean matched pair- it just means they likely came off the same production.  more than likely you won't find a sequential number at a place like gc.  a true matched pair means that someone needed to plot the fq responses from each mic and they match eachother.  so for a true matched pair you need to see the matching plots.

So what do you guys think about the Oktava MK012 ? Are they good for both small clubs and ampitheatres?
What will happen if they are not a true matched pair? Will I get nothing but feedback if they get too close?

from what i understand Oktava doesn't have the best quality control (although it has improved recently some people say). So the parts inside the bodies fo the mics may vary. So basically, worst case scenario, you have two of the "same" microphones, but since they have different parts, they will sound very different sonically.. I'm not sure of how bad it can get either.

But i'm gonna throw in another recommendation for the ADK's :D

Ok so it seems like ADK's are the way to go. Do I have to get a matched pair? I found a site called http://www.newsoundcard.com/g/garvin/default.asp?S=500&A=F&SearchText=adk&PCategoryID=-1
They have a  A51 Type V with shock mount and bag for $149. What is the diffrence between the Type V and the High Spl?   :headphones:

I don't recommend large diaphram condensers for taping, they don't have good/consistent off-axis response, and they're cumbersome.  They're best suited for close micing in the studio.  I recommend Rode NT5's or an NT4 (self-powered stereo mic), both can be found cheap new on eBay.

No

The polar patterns will be slightly different

Will this effect you? Of course not. If you are using the mics for "serrious" applications, I'd look into matching. But with what I iamgine you will be using them for, then you need not worry.

Best of luck finding new toys!!!

i'd have to disagree.  every LD adk recording i've heard smokes the NT5/4 recordings i've heard.  not sure why you think LD aren't good for taping?  check out some ADK TL & Neumann U89 recordings and i think you'll change your mind.  i'd definitely say get the ADK LE's out of your choice of mics.
