What mics to buy?...
« on: March 15, 2004, 01:11:41 PM »
I have finally saved enough to purchase some quality mics...looking to spend around 1400....Most of my taping is in small venues to medium sized...was looking at MBHO603a's or KM140's....more than likely will be running v2>ADC20>m1...any thoughts or experience with these mics....?  Thanks for the space...
Peace,
Barrett

IF you want KM140s for around $1400, they will have to be pre-owned.
Try the AKG 480/ck61/63 caps.  That should be within your budget!

hmm... the AKG's don't exactly sound right to me with V2>ADC-20... I'd go with the MBHO's or (gasp!) Neumanns.

The 480's are great mics, though :)

good luck finding the 140s for 1400 anymore... looks more like 1500+ on them since the neumann price increases.  but i say go for the neumanns

Neumann's with that v2 would sound great, IMO. Sell the adc-20 and get a mod-sbm-1 and you are mint.

I think I'll hold off on the mbho's and go for the km140's.....When did the price increase happen??  Hey phil how are things in d town?  I haven't had much experience with AKG's so I don't know if I want to go down that road....I'm planning on purchasing all used gear...

the neumanns have been steadily increasing in price over the last 2 years due to demand increase and the weak dollar.  id be shocked if neumann didnt increase again in the next 6mo - year.

The 480s are a great option for you.  I love em with my v2, but I also really dig my neumann km184s with the v2 as well.  Some people don't dig the 480>v2 sound, but I for one, think it's a pretty kickass setup.  It all comes down to what your ears tell you.  The best bet would be to listen to a few shows made with the different mics you're considering.  I'd be happy to send off dats of my 480s or km184s if you need any comparisons.

fwiw, there are a lot of panic tapes that circulate from 98-99 and maybe some of 2000 that are 48x>v2>adc-20 (jamie syrek)...a lot of them are 482 tapes...but you may try tracking down some of those if you are interested in the combo...all the ones i have are 482's, i think, though i know he ran other caps.  the 482 tapes generate an unspeakable amount of low-end.
