TLM 103 vs 170
« on: July 28, 2004, 07:55:47 AM »
Looking at Neumann mics. Beside price, what's the difference between the TLM 103 vs 170 model.

Also, I haven't seen these sold as matched pair as I've seen other brands. Should I be asking for a matching pair or sequenced serial numbers when buying a new pair of Neumanns?

103 is just a card, while the 170 is multi pattern ...

I've never understood why people choose the 170's over the u89s. I think the u89s are MUCH better sounding mics...

:::choosing 170 over u89:::::

1. no shock mounts
2. smaller
3. cheaper
4. did i say no shock mounts?
5. less colour(not that neumann colour is bad)
6. best sounding hyper pattern out there

no shockmount? you can do the same thing with the u89s... $200/pair for the ring mounts.

next.

cheaper? a little bit but when spending that much money on mics I'd quit counting pennies and get what sounded better.

less colour? true, but then why buy Neumann LD's if you don't want them to sound like Neumann LD's?

you may be correct on the hyper, never really compared.

ok ..   well i didnt know the u89 was internally shockmounted like the 170..  my bad..   but the swivel mount for the 170 is also shock resistant(doubling the shock insulation)  ::my sorries before "check myself before i wreck myself" ::

and as for LD sound..  the 170 has it, albeit without the famous colour of the u89,87..  I personally prefer it w/o for instruments as i am not taping just the vocals(where the u89 shines)..

dont get me wrong..  the u89 is a saweet mic and i prefer the neumann sound to all other high end mics..  i was just putting up da dukes for the 170..
