What's a bm2p+ UA5 worth?
« on: December 07, 2005, 01:29:02 PM »
Just wondering.  I like it and all, but it doesn't really fit my needs very well.  Have it, plus a brand new never used 9V battery and the adaptaplug cable.  Wall wart, and original box.  Used once in the field (last weekend) with perfectly good results.

Anyone help me out with what it might go for?  I searched and didn't find any, and I don't think I can compare it to the Oade mod prices.

Private PM is fine; no need to clutter this forum.  Didn't think it belonged in the YS forum so I posted here.  Hope that's OK.

Thanks,
Dirk

*NOTE:  Not looking to sell at this time, just curious what the price range would be for it in case I do decide to unload it.*

I'd say $300 is fair.

I would say if it's in the same condition as when you bought it, and it's seen little use, it's worth 90-100% of what you paid for it.

damn, i would think its worth more than that - i was gonna say more like 400, depending on the condition of the ua-5.

I asked because I really don't know the answer, but I'm positive $300 is too low.

I also feel that around $400.00 is about right. I bought my UA-5 used off ebay for $170.00, and it came with the original reciept for over $300.00.  Busman2 did my p+mod for $160.00 shipped. So, my unit new upgraded with the BM2p+ would have been over $560.00, and used I was able to do it for $330.00, which I felt was a steal.

Sorry, I didn't see that it was a presence mod.

Back in the day, when Chris started doing these, he offered his original modded ua5 to somebody for $300, so that's what I was basing the price on.

duh.. shouldn't wake and bake.... my math is off here....over $460.00 for my unit new with the upgrade, and still $330.00 with a low used price I was able to get and with Chris's upgrde.

I believe it means the phantom power was modded as well as the analog inputs, still the same bm2 transparent sound though.  Someone chime in if need be...

Bullshit.

What if I paid $20 for it originally?

Or similarly, what if grandpa dies and leaves you his prized pair of Elams?  You gonna give those away when the time comes?  NOT.  You're gonna sell them for $13K apiece, because that's their worth.

My original question was looking for a rough estimate on a dollar figure, should I decide to sell.  Doesn't matter at all what I paid for it (I did NOT pay $20 unfortunately!), it's a question of what it's actual worth is.

All irrelevant now since I've sold it, but the apparent range is anywhere from $400 - $450.

Yeah but there is a market for ua-5's, modded or unmodded.  Bottom fell out of the dat market.

edit to add:
What I mean is, doesn't matter what the d7 is worth, you will never get it because there is no demand.  Hence, you must sell below est. value of the deck.  There is a market for ua-5's, so one would be able to get an est. value of the ua-5 in a sale.  So back to the original question, what is the bm2p+ worth?  Personally, I think the $400 mark is a legitimate estimate.  Just my $.02

Bullshit.

My response included two unnoted assumptions:

<1> you paid a typical market price for the unit
and/or
<2> you, like me, base your gear prices on what you paid (with potential exceptions if the current market value is radically different than when purchased)

My response was not intended to address exceptions in which one might pick up a piece of gear for far, far below its actual value, per your examples, or those in which one may attempt to cash in on a piece of gear's increased valuation due to shifts in the marketplace.  (Not suggesting your sale fell into one of these categories.)

At the time when I was looking for mine, I would have paid $450.00 for it, and would have jumped for it at $400.00, and now that I own one I will say that it is worth it. Chris does a great job.

Point taken and acknowledged.  However, I wanted to know what price I should ask for my UA5 so that I wasn't absurdly low (who wants to LOSE money, right?) or outrageously high.  Even a range, in lieu of an actual figure, would have helped me decide.  What I paid for the unit initially should be irrelevant.  I wanted to know what the going rate was.

My response was not driven so much by your initial response (not helpful to me), but by the parroting of that same response later on in the discussion.  It's not helpful, nor is it relevant.

To clarify, there is no profiteering intent here on my part.  I've certainly sold things (here and elsewhere) and made a small profit, but I've also sold things at a loss (both here and elsewhere) so it all balances out in the end.  I base my asking prices on what I feel the market rate is (taking age, condition, etc) into consideration as well.  I don't necessarily feel the need to price things according to what I paid for them.  TS.com is not fantasy land, after all.  Or is it?

So let me get this straight Dirk, you don't want to profit from selling your box, but you refuse to sell it for what you paid for it plus a little more (shipping/packaging).  Whatever.

I said nothing of the sort, did I?  My original question is what are they worth.  I was looking for a dollar figure so that if I did decide to sell I knew what to ask for it on this site, as a fair amount.  I'm not looking to profit off anyone here at all, so I resent the implication.

I'm curious Dirk why my quoting of Brian's response is irrelevant?  You asked for the opinion of this community and I gave you mine, which just so happened to be the same as Brian's.  I'm sorry it didn't follow your logic, that you were trying to maximize a profit on your gear and justifying it by "guaging" the market value through our responses.

OK, maybe I wasn't clear initially in what I was looking for.  I was looking for a dollar range to determine whether or not to sell it (because I didn't like it) or to just put it up on a shelf and forget about it.  There was no profit motive involved whatsoever, so I resent your implication.

I bought my V3 for $840.  If I sell it on this site, it will be for $840 + shipping.  If I sell it on ebay it will have a reserve that is comparable to market rate.  Depending on what my money situation is at the moment of sale, is the deciding factor of where, and for how much I sell it for.  Making money off gear when selling it on this site is a real shitty thing to do.  If you want to maximize your profit on a piece of gear sell it on ebay.  Then again the reason you probably didn't want to sell this UA5 on ebay is because noone would know what the hell a bm2p+ mod is.  Unfortunatley for you there is no market for it on ebay because the only people that know what one is are members of this site.

Again, I never said anything about maximizing my profit, so don't put words in my mouth.

I think I made my reasons for asking clear in my previous post.  I happened to buy a piece of gear at a certain price, accessorize it with cables and batteries and then purchase a mod and upgrade to it.  As it turned out, the total cost I put into the item in question and the final amount I sold it for were pretty close.  It was a total impulse buy from the get-go and I simply did not care for it when all was said and done.  Had it for all of about 4 weeks and decided it wasn't for me.  How much depreciation am I supposed to work in on a "used twice" item?

I won't get into the Ebay argument at all.

If you want to take offense to any of this, be my guest.  If you choose not to ever buy anything from me, that's fine too.  I'm not out to make money on anyone here; in fact if I were to add up what I've bought on TS versus what I've sold, I'd most definitely be in the red.  But so what?  All I wanted to know is what the going rate was, because I'd never seen one for sale.

Take it as you wish,
Dirk

I will put my 2 cents in.

Its hard to judge the price on these because a not a ton of people have heard them but I think Dirk's price is not out of line especially with a battery pack.

The sound is worth it. <<<<shameless plug>>>> ;D

I wouldn't change to anythng else I really enjoy the recordings I am making with it. I did own a T+ and sold it to keep mine.

And just to clarify in case my above post is misinterpreted, I think the mods Chris does to these units are terrific and well worth it.  Unfortunately, I didn't care much for the combos I tried before the mod, and the results after the mod - although they were a huge improvement, were not what I was looking for either.  I guess the UA5 in general just wasn't for me.

I put a bunch of stuff on the shelf (or sold it) in a quest for something new and different, and in the end I realized that the stuff I had was what I wanted in the first place.  So that's what I went back to.

To anyone considering a UA5 though, I would most definitely recommend the bm2p+ mod..

I'll step in as well. I ended up buying the UA-5 Dirk had and I felt the price was completly fair, I in no way felt that I was getting ripped off by him. I had been in the market for a long time and felt that this UA-5 was the way to go.  Dirk was a stand up guy throughout the process and I would definitly buy from him again. Carry on.

Dirk, after re-reading my post today, I sound like an ass.  You got under my skin a little and I retaliated.

Sorry, no hard feelings from me and I hope you feel the same.

+T Dirk.

No worries at all, and no hard feelings here either.  I can see how what I wrote could easily be misconstrued as an attempt to make money off the good people of this site.  Not my intent at all, and apologies all around to anyone who might have taken it that way.  +t to all from me as well.
