Need md5 help...
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:19:00 AM »
Alright...  I'm just getting into flac-ing and torrenting.  I can encode to flac just fine.  But how on earth do I generate an md5 checksum?  Where can I get free software?

I feel like an idiot at this point...  this process has just about beaten me down...

Traders Little Helper can create check sums, look at the tabs, one of them is Create Check Sums. flac frontend can create flac fingerprints which are very similar to MD5s. Both allow one to verify the encode>decode process has been done with no errors.

An easy program you can also try out to get md5 checksums is md5 summer.  It's super easy to use.  Just start it up, direct the program to the folder that contains your flac files, and then hit "create sums."  It will then create the md5 checksums, and when finished, it will prompt you to name the .md5 file which contains all the checksums (btw, use notepad if you want to view the md5 file).  This should probably be in the etree naming convention.  That's all it takes!

;D  THANK YOU FELLAS!!!  +T's all around...  and again in 12!!!

I've been battling with TLH all freakin' day...  I'd generate an md5, but in the "Progress Log"...  the files would say "verified ok"...  but following that was "checksum does not match".  All freakin' day!  So, I downloaded a couple of random md5 freeware's from various sources...  and got nothing...  ALL DAY LONG!  Talked to a couple of friends on the phone...  nothing...  had a buddy come over to set me straight...  we got sidetracked and...  still nothing.  So, I finally came to my senses and asked y'all...  the smartest y'all that I know.  And within minutes...  I'm generating proper md5 files.  I should have asked 12 hours ago...  but me not so smart!  Thank goodness y'all are!!!

http://md5summer.com/ is the answer to my daylong ass-kicking!  Thank you su6oxone...  if you ever make it up to MN...  I will gladly buy you a beer...  or 12!!!  I'm a happy camper about to try my wits at uploading next...  I'll let y'all know how it goes...  I might finally get caught up with the rest of the modern free world...  or at least with modern teenagers...   :P

Anyone needing an md5 checksum program...  http://md5summer.com/  is pretty slick!

 ;D  Can't thank you enough...

this thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning the original technique:  using the command-line.

install md5sum.exe (downloadable from http://www.etree.org/)
open a DOS / unix shell, navigate to the folder in question.  (There's a Microsoft Power Toy called "Open Command Window Here" that'll become your best friend if you use this technique.)

then run 'md5sum *.flac > flac.md5'

to confirm, run the md5sum program with a '-c' flag, as in:  md5sum -c md5_filename.md5
