Can someone with a V3 help me out..?
« on: December 26, 2005, 04:38:06 PM »
Hey All,
Has anyone seen this with a V3?

If I slightly wiggle or move the power supply cable the unit power cycles quickly and the levels spike.  If I connect the cable tightly it will not power on at all.  It needs to be just tight enough.  AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG HERE?  So far it has never been a problem as I have been careful not to touch it while recording but it is bothersome, nonetheless.

Thanks,
Jesse

its not an uncommon problem.

you can fix it by as described below (this is an extract from an email i received from grace) (i used a tooth pick):

We have seen a small number of cases where the split center pin has gotten bent on the DC V3 DC input jack that has resulted in an intermittent power connection.

To begin with, this power connector was chosen based on several requirements.  As you know there is no extra real estate on the V3's rear panel.  Because of this we were not able to continue using the 4-pin xlr configuration that was utilized in the Lunatec V2.  The locking DC barrel connector was implemented because of its size and reliability.  Additionally the locking collar was a requirement for obvious reasons.  Unfortunately, the split center pin on these connectors can get bent together causing the connection to become intermittent.  When the center pin is properly aligned, these connectors are completely reliable.

To adjust the center pin, begin by verifying that it is properly centered in the connector opening (it should be...).  Next, using a strong thin object (think xacto knife) insert it in the center pin split and spread the pins apart.  I would recommend doing a little at a time.  -adjust it and then test the connection, repeat as necessary.  Once this is done, you should not have any problems with the connector.

thanks phil

usually all you need to do is take a small screwdriver and split the 2 power pins inside in the jack on the v-3.  just a little prying apart of the pins should do the trick.

i would be more than happy to make you a new power cable if you need one.
thanks

yep, tahts the answer, get a small screwdriver, insert in dc jack, and VERY GENTLY split apart the connectors, replace cable and done

FWIW< just because of this problem, i have my v3 rack-mounted and my power supply/digi-cables/mic-cables all stay connected 100% of the time

Wow guys...thanks for the info.  That worked like a charm.  Do they make any 1/2 rackmounts?  Do you guys all just make your own racks?  I'd like to find a safer home for my new investment.

Thanks again,
Jesse

Wow! This problem's apparently more widespread than I ever knew. It happened to me 3 or 4 times in the year or so I had my V3. The first time I was sure I'd blown it up...a quick email to Grace straightened everything out.

This info should definitely be placed in the FAQ if it isn't already...

same thing happened to me with the first v3 I used.  couldn't even get power unless I bent and jiggled the cable a lot.  ts rules and I had it working in a few seconds.  my new one has never had this issue.

I noticed this issue with the V3 I just bought and one I used 2 years ago.  I went with Bean's advice and zip-tied 'er down to my cage.

Wow, was I lucky to have stumbled across this thread.  I have my original box sitting here in front of me with the unit all packed away to send it back for repair. I am experiencing the exact same problem. Thanx guys this place is the greatest!
