Title: More on DPA 4099s
Post by: WiFiJeff on June 16, 2009, 10:49:49 PM
I wrote in March/April about using the dpa 4099 hypercards along with omnis (DPA 4063s or Sanken COS11s) four track, and taking the bass (from about 250 Hz down) from the omnis to fill out the 4099 recordings, I did this from March through mid May in order to bring opera voices upfront and personal (I offered sets of recordings here and a couple of TS folks requested them, but I've had zero feedback so far from them).

Last week I had a situation where I was no longer up front, but had to tape from upstairs (though forward and to the side).  I decided to go four track for this as well, since omnis don't cut it for me when too distant.  I ended up mixing the two sets of tracks without any EQing, on the theory that since the omni and hypercard cap were only as far apart as the halves of an mK4 cap, for example, I'd have a little less directionality, more like a cardioid cap, from mixing them, while also getting some help in the bass from the omnis.  I am very happy with how this turned out, way better than any tiny cardioid I've tried.  I'll have to listen to the mix after a rest to see if it still thrills me as much (and if my pro friend validates on his high-end monitors my non-objective response), if so I have a new alter-MO.

Interesting to hear, Jeff.  I'd like to try this at some point.  I have some other ideas I'll share with you via PM that have worked well for me when using omnis from a similar location for similar music.

how did this turn out? i am still looking for a good stealthable cardioid mic to replace my DPA 4061 for distant recordings.
How are the DPA 4099 modded? Which Version did you use? 4099 G/D/U etc.?

Nowadays you would get the DPA 4081s, which are the 4099s out of the mount.  I would get the most sensitive version, but if you're using 4061s you might want the equivalent.  The distance recording I made turned out well, but I have not repeated the experiment much since it is always better to sit closer when you can.  In a lousy acoustic hall the 4099s (or 4081s) do great upfront but can't fix the bad acoustic from far away.

Thank you Jeff.

Judging from your posts your opinion is that the DPA 4081 is the best minature cardioid mic one could use for stealth taping. So i really would like to give them a try (and replace my DPA 4061 which i dont really like for louder concerts.)

I did not find just one recording by a taper using the DPA 4081s - peculiar.

Do you probably know if i can use the DPA 4081 with my MMA6000?

The 4099s (and I am pretty sure the 4081s, but ask DPA US) work great with the MMA6000.
