We need to move Taperssection to a different server due to fact that this server contains several components which are not replaceable (EOL). The new machine is in the same datacenter, with much more muscle. I don't expect this to take longer than 12 hours and will keep you as posted as to progress as much as possible!
Thanks for understanding!

I seem to recall your last estimate was woefully short of the actual time it took to do whatever it was that was done. Guess I'll be over-productive for the next three to four days. :P
If the server is down, how will you keep us updated? A message page that you periodically update with a message like: Don't Panic. Gone phishin for awhile.

or "I'm holding the site hostage. After receiving paypal donations for eleventy hundred dollars, I'll release the hostages without harm. Donations as gifts over sales preferred." and include a paypal button. :P

I had a nervous twitch developed over the past 24 hours. It's gone now. Thanks Bri.
;D

Guess it's a good thing I got everything done today since the weather turns shitty tomorrow and I'll be back here spending too much time.
Thanks Bri
Is it my imagination or is the new server quicker than the old one?
-
I was beginning to get worried. Was out taping Fri, Sat, and Sun (so I missed the announcement) and when I try to get on Monday, nada.
Thanks for taking care of the server. :-) I'll contribute after I get employed again. Promise!
-
Heh, thanks for the kind words and support! Enjoy!
Yes, this new server should run circles around the old one! :)
-
I missed out on a Pixies show tonight... completely lost sight of today being the 30th and ate my $70 ticket.... I blame my lack of contact with Team DC! ;D
Wish I could say, "just kidding"....
but seriously, glad we're back
-
Good to have ya back ;)

PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 This totally reminds me of that scene in History Of The World, Part I from the Roman Empire when Comicus (Mel Brooks for the uninitiated who should stop what they're doing and see this movie ASAP) says "Just act natural. Whatever you do don't panic. Don't panic." Then the guard (Mucas I think) spots him/them and shouts "There they are!" ... to which of course Brooks shouts "PANIIIICCCCCCC!!!!!!" :yack:
As always, thanks for your continued work Bri. Care to share the specs of this new beast for your fellow techie-tapers to  over, I mean, enjoy ;)
Oh yeah, and I also missed the announcement (I mean how often does one visit this part of the board when things are working?). Maybe next time a downpage or post re-iterating what's going on? I definitely freaked out when I got errors trying to bring up bookmarks & the cpanel widget when I tried hitting the homepage.

You say 'thanks for the patience' to what I respond...No, thank YOU, padre!
-
All I can say is that it was a close one......The withdrawal from TS was horrid...I almost didn't make it..... >:D
-
Looks like we're back, again
thanks Bri

yeah, database MELTDOWN. Had to roll back about 10 hours :( sorry! I need sleeps!!!

I hate those Isihara (sp?) tests. I fail them everytime - nothing but a bunch of different sized dots.

Careful with the BETA software. :-X
There is a reason SMF advises against running it on a production site. BTW...still getting SMF unable to connect to database errors.

BTW...still getting SMF unable to connect to database errors.
same, more so on pp.com then ts.com, but the same problem.

pp.com is a parked site :P
if you mean PayPal ... it's been a while since I worked there but I'm pretty sure they aren't powered by SMF ???

I wondered about that too...the SMF download page says dont do it.
You really should stick with the 1.1.X series. I wouldnt make the move until the 2.0 FINAL release has some time in the water.
Replying still seems a bit horked...the post goes through, but refreshes to an error page.
says: Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator. "

fwiw, the downtime is not related to the SMF version, it's a result of a problem that occurred on the old server, which is why we had to move. A hardware failure froze the old machine and the drives had to be put in a temporary box so I could do the transfer. The crash corrupted several small parts of the database which may be causing the errors. SMF sensed the error and tried to repair it. The problem is the taperssection.com database is over 2Gigs so a full repair can take upto and over 24 hours. When a repair is executed, the database is locked, and all future requests are put into a queue. When the queue is full, the database refuses any more connections, thus "unable to connect to database" errors.
It's very frustrating from my standpoint, but I am working on it, and doing as much work as possible late night as not to interrupt the site during peak hours. I am not a db admin by trade, but am working with a few friends who are and hoping we can get this smoothed out easily. The database is just so gosh dang big ;)
Thanks for understanding and for your patience!

please copy paste full text of errors here...

just tried to reply to a post, got an error - sorry didn't copy it but it's been quoted here earlier today, I'll see if I can find it - when I tried to post my reply again I got a message that I had already posted the reply.
Same thing when I tried to post here:
Database Error
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
then
An Error Has Occurred!
You already submitted this post! You might have accidentally double clicked or tried to refresh.

yes, I notice this as well, should have this fixed soon...

I'm getting a database error when attempting to load sent PMs.
-
I keep getting the same error when I try to post

Thanks for the continued work Bri. If you need extra DBA hands, I've got a friend/former co-worker who is a mysql wizard and manages DB's well over 2GB in size. Feel free to PM me if you need me to tap him for some extra assistance or just to bounce things off of.

Trying to remove or move a post (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=130074.0):
Database Error
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
Update: Upon refreshing the page, looks like the move actually worked. Remove did not (tried another thread (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=130071.0)).
