Title: Amazon UNLIMITED backup $60/year.
Post by: Fatah Ruark (aka MIKE B) on March 26, 2015, 05:23:46 PM
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/home#

$60/year is probably cheap enough that I'm going to give this a try. I have two on site copies of all my data and an off site copy that I probably don't update often enough. $60/year seems like it's worth it to be able to either quit the offsite backup...or update it a lot less frequently.

Now the question is...how long is it going to take me to upload 4TB of data?

They do have a 3 month trial as well...hopefully I can upload that much data in that amount of time. :P

Let us know what you think of this service after you have had a chance to try it out. I'm curious if it is truly unlimited. Many of the other services that say that they are unlimited are actually unlimited up to a certain normal usage point and then want more $.

I like the CIA/NSA having copies of all my data in one really easy to mine place.   ;D

Apparently that works so well the CIA is paying them $100's of millions for access to their cloud.

Well, it's AWS cloud technology but it's on CIA owned and operated infrastructure, independent from the AWS public cloud.

I'm sure the CIA and NSA have access to AWS public cloud but this article in particular talks about an on premises solution unless I'm missing something. It's significant but I think it confuses people. "Cloud" gets thrown around so much it means different things depending on the context and most people really have no idea what "The Cloud" means. Even in the IT industry I find this concept is still a bit nebulous.

Regarding the op, this solution seems to be a direct competitor to Apple's iCloud where you can access the same data on all of your devices. Interesting, but not sure it will work for a 4TB filesystem of FLACs. I'll have to give the free trial a whirl and see what it really is.

Is this only manual backup? If so, it's nothing I'm going to be ditching CrashPlan for.

I can't imagine it's not automatically backing up additional data as I add it. I can't test that until I finish backing up though...which looks like it will take about 37 days. It's been about 26 hours and I've uploaded a little over 100GB. I have 3.7 TB total that I'm backing up.

Should I be worried the CIA is going to know I have a large collection of Justin Beiber MP3's?

Any update on this?  I'm thinking of taking the plunge but had a few questions first.

1. How is the desktop app? Good upload speeds?
2. Can I use any security within the cloud? I'd like to set up separate folders and give access to only certain folders if possible.
3. How is the mobile access?  I would imagine no FLAC support?

x2.  Unlimited is far from unlimited.  Every site that I've checked closely that has 'unlimited' storage caps you at 1tb, then you go way up in price since you're violating their 'fair use' clause.

Advertising unlimited storage is a total scam.

I've got 2TB+ uploaded to CrashPlan with no problems.

Awesome.  How much?

I paid I think $119 for a year under MyPCBackup's 'unlimited' plan, which gives me 1TB.

$5.99/mo. if you pay monthly, or down to $4/mo if you pay for several years up front.

I gave up on this. A few issues that need to be ironed out:

1. No way to throttle your uploads with the desktop app.
2. No way to resume your uploads.

Maybe I was missing something...but I couldn't figure either of those issues out.

I'm pretty good with my backups for the most part. I don't think it's worth it for me yet.
