total computer newbie here. Downloaded bitTornado and have finally got to download a bitTorrent :D shitty thing is that I couldn't get a good connection rate. :'( My question; anyone know how to open ports 6881-6889 on a Zone Alarm firewall. I went to the Bt FAQ's and It gave me info for windows XP and Zone Alarm pro firewalls. So any help would be cool thanks. Oh ya I've got DSL so thats not the reason for a slow upload its the firewall, I think.

I'd be surprised if it's the zone alarm firewall -- easy way to check, try disabling the firewall and running a bittorrent. Further, should be easy to adopt the zonealarm pro instructions to the non-pro version.
Question -- what make/model dsl modem do you have? Many of the dsl modems being shipped these days have an internal firewall (aerscom, etc.) and its settings need to be modified to allow port forwarding.
Also re connection rate -- sometimes that's just how things work (i.e. a slow torrent) -- firewall issues generally result in a VERY slow upload speed -- were you seeing any real upload activity on your torrent?
-
are you running straight from your dsl modem into your computer via ethernet/wireless OR are you running thru a router? if its a router..you will need to configure the ports there....
-
NOTE -- some dsl modems also double as routers (i.e. some of the arescom models)

yea..i forget about this..as mine doestn...but good point....some/most routers have built in firewalls(nat?)....so you will need to configure(open the ports) for bittorrent.

IT's a motorola SB5100 surfboard cable modem
Whats a router?

OK shut off my firewall and was getting 92KB/S but the light never turned green. is that a normal connection rate. I had it on high speed DSL? is that what I'm suppose to be running? or low speed, seed, superseed ect.
-
switch it to "unlimited" -- and let it run for a while, see how you do then.

6 KB/S?

will it do better on the high speed dsl setting? do whatever works best, what are your download speeds?

http://bittornado.com/faq.html
I found some things here that helped me to set my port forwarding correctly.
Additionally, some new DSl modems have routers built in to them ( Westell 2200 ). They need to be "bridged" in order to allow you to bypass their router.

right now trying one 35K connected to 2seeds and 5 peers

If you're opening only those ports make sure you set that port range int the bittornado prefs page. bittornado by default randomizes ports over a huge range which you'll want to constrain. Then you'll also need to configure your DSL modem if it has a firewall. If you are an MSN subscriber you might as well as give up as they lock their modems.

with my zone alarm all you do is let bit torrent connect to interent. and I get 350+ (cabel though) no need to open ports.

same ehre when i ran zone alarm

but you have cable probably...DSL is different most of the time. Nearly all cable modems are just bridges but most DSL modems are actually switches so they require additional configuration.

i have msn and have got DL's as high as 125, and around 90 UL, but often I get kicked competely and have to reboot the puter. More often the rate range from a low of 17 to a high of 75. The modem is a combo router for wireless, but works more often than not. Any thoughts as to how to correct? When I alt/control/delete I see the message "Bt not responding". Just curious, is it general consensus that MSN sucks? (it's suposed to be a 1.5 upgrade connection.
thanks

My understanding is that the DSL modems MSN gives you are locked down and you can't open ports.
So yeah MSN sux0rs...

Ethan: While this used to be true, the aerescom dsl "modem" my buddy chris received from MSN/Qwest was configurable and we were able to open the ports necessary to disable the bittorrnet firewall status.
This is not to imply that MSN doesn't suck 8)
Dylandenver -- if you want good dsl speeds in the denver area, I strongly recommend ditching msn and using your dsl setup with an independent ISP -- My house is around 20,000 feet from the central office (a LONG distance) and, with my upgraded service I reliably see 900k-up and 1.5mb down -- I use pcisys.net as my ISP (been using them since 1999) and have NEVER had an issue.

I opened the BT ports thru my Windows XP firewall, set my preferences on Tornado properly, and I'm still only uploading at 15kbs. I run DSL through Verizon, not sure what brand of modem I'm running at the moment since I'm at work. But assuming the next step to higher upload speed is to reconfigure my modem/router, how does a computer-impaired person like myself find out if I have a router or not, and how do I reconfigure my modem and/or router?
It's taking people like 2 weeks to get my shows! :o
Thanks!

how fast can you upload using a protocol other than bittorrent. 15kb up could well be the max for your service. dslreports.com has some bandwidth tests you can look at.
Also, it's worth confirming that the "rest of the world" is now seeing you as not being firewalled.
Easiest way to test this -- start a torrent on bt.etree.org, click the "peers [see full list]" link and find your ip address in the list of peers. Yours will likely be red -- if the port number listed after your ip address is in parenthesis, you're still firewalled, your dsl modem/router may have a hardware firewall that needs to be unblocked as well.
-
Thanks! I'm not being shown as firewalled on the torrent I'm currently uploading.
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=10990&dllist=1#seeders
I'll have to check my bandwith limit. How do I do that exactly?
-
to test your speed -- go to http://speedtest.dslreports.com
you should stop all other bandwidth-related tasks before doing so (since anything else using your bandwidth would cut down on your speed)
-
You should also test at various times of the day and do an average.
One test is not a large enough sample.
-
thank you both, +T's all around.
-
Okay, ran the test and I have an upload speed of 130 kb/s. So why do I upload at 15 kb/s on my bit torrents? ???

You are confusing bits and bytes...
The speed test results are in bits and Bittorrents display is in bytes.
15 bytes * 8 bits/byte = 120 bits
therefore 120 kbps .
Since you test out at this you should cap your upload below 12 KB/s in your bittorrent window. This will assure you have enough head room for ACK packets of incoming data packets. Translation: so things go as fast as possible
