Title: 20V Laptop Power??
Post by: mfh2014 on July 07, 2003, 01:37:35 PM: Hey all...just wondering if anyone is using a laptop that takes 20V DC power..I'm experimenting with my Dell X200 and Tascam US-122, and it looks like I'll need some outboard battery options...my AC adapter lists the DC output 20V, 2.5A...are there any options that people use that can accomodate this power draw??

I know this is old but I just got one of these laptops, anyone got a good external power solution. I found some in the 300-400 range or the auto/air (12V) route but don't want to spend that much or lug around Lead.

I don't have sources, but you can get *step UP* DC adapters that take 12V > 16..20V (settings adjustable). They are designed to run laptops off car batteries. A marvel of engineeering, actually, since they must convert to AC, transform up, and convert back to DC, and they do it with great efficiency.

I've got a couple of these, but they came bundled with a product. Look in a laptop accessories sotre. No need to go up to 120V though.

Post by: Dr.FOB on March 20, 2006, 10:32:46 PM: Seek out the appropriate Targus adapter. The later models will have the output capacity for your 50W demands.
Use a 12V SLA or appropriate 12-14V LiON battery to power the adapter. It's worked for me for years with my Sony Vaio that uses a 16VDC adapter. Note: the loading indicated is for battery charging. If you come to the show with a fully charged battery you will never see that king of adapter load.

Used one of these personally. Ran the most power hungry laptop out there. Sager 5690. EXCELLENT customer service although they are a bit pricey. $175ish if I remember correctly.

Personally I'd go with a Valence. Fairly low profile, custom tip for the X200 and long battery life. A little more, but worthwhile for the "saphion" technology IMO.
