Title: Cassette Transfer

Anybody have a nice setup that could at least put a cassette I'm getting onto DAT if not cd.

94 DMB.  Only copy I have seen anywhere in 2 years of looking is a tape and the guy said he would send it to me if I can convert it.

For cassette>cd transfers:

Take the analog out of your cassette deck into an a/d converter.  IMO it is best to then go digital in on your soundcard.  Use your .wav editor to take out the analog hiss, increase gain (if needed), and cut tracks (I recommend Wavelab for this). and burn cd/dvd/dat.

I understand the process of going to CD but I do not have a cassette deck.

I do have a buddy who can take it from cassette to DAT and then I could go from there.  How much quality would I lose with the extra step?

probably none as long as the cassette deck is in good shape.  once you've got it on a digital source (DAT) as long as you don't do anything to the digital signal (ie. unnecessary resampling) you should be fine.

If the cassette deck hasn't been used in a while, make sure your friend cleans the heads by giving them a good alcohol swab first...I'd also suggest running it through the best A/D you can get your hands on - ideally an outboard A/D if you own one; if not, then a home deck, and then a portable as your last resort...

Got my hands on a cassette deck.  Gonna run Deck -> RCA/Mini -> Mini/XLR -> UA-5 -> DiO 2496.  Sound good?  Should I run my UA-5 @ 96Hz and then resample in Soundforge or just run 44.1Hz the whole way through?

I take it you're running RCA/mini > mini/XLR because those are the cables you have handy?

Why not just run Deck > RCA > UA5, into the RCAs in the back of the UA5?  

I'd run at 24/96 on the UA5, then dither/resample with software using UV22HR or whatever it is, I can never remember.

You are correct about the cables.  One thing I like about the XLR inputs is how much easier it is to adjust levels.    Is the 24 bit a setting on the UA-5?  Don't have it in front of me to look at.

Yeah, it should be.  I think you need to flip the switch on the back to ADV, among other things.  Don't have one in front of me, so not positive.
