Title: 24 bit transfer questions
Post by: Albix714 on May 26, 2006, 05:01:28 PM

I'm going to start doing 24 bit transfers.

Here's my setup:

cassette > Nak deck > RCA > Audiophile 2496 > WinXP Pro > CEP 2.0 > CD Wave Editor.

I have access to a UA-5 (no digi mod). Would using that instead of the Audiophile card make a huge difference?

Any experience and tips anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

my .02 would be that the 2496 is the better of the two options.  it seems to be a highly respected card.

I would think that you'd get better results with the UA-5.
simply because the A/D conversion is taking place in the UA-5, and outside of your computer.  There's a lot of electrical noise inside your computer, so I think it's best to avoid that altogether and use the UA-5.

why not transfer a small portion of a tape twice, to test each method, and see which one works better...

Agreed.  I tested the Ego-Systems Waveterminal 2496 for just this sort of transferring, and found an external soundcard produced better, lower noise results - audibly, too, not just based on analysis, but listening.

Can't hurt.  I'll be stunned if the Audiophile 2496 sounds better, though.
