FR-2le brickwalls @ 1hr mark?
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:10:14 AM »
I've had my Fostex for years/ love it/ no problems. I have used this 8gb SanDisk Extreme many times before, and had just dump the old files.
So I was recording (YMSB- if you're curious) both sets on this same card @ 24/96. I was occasionally checking levels, but didn't touch anything once I hit record. It seemed like a fine pull.
I transferred the files using a SanDisk card reader. Once it was on my computer, I realized at almost exactly the 1 hour mark, some clicking started. It came on very quickly, and soon overtook the levels and redlined the rest of the set (the music was there, just under the noise). I thought it might have been a fluke; but it did the exact same thing at the exact same mark for the second set. Very frustrating!
I haven't had a chance to do any tests with it yet- but I wanted to offer this up to see if anyone had experienced this.
Seems like it could be a setting? I welcome all/ any thoughts ideas. Thanks  ~

I'll take a stab and say it's unit specific. I did some 24/96 and 24/88 recordings and the only noteworthy info I found was that it didn't start a new file when the current one was full.

Can you replicate it at home at a different resolution (or even again at 26/96)

24/96 at about 57 minutes you are at the 2 GB file size.....maybe check and reformat to 4GB.
Record at 24/44.1 instead.

imo these guys are on the right track
the fr2le doesn't record over 2gb file sizes and does not start a new track - at 24/96 you are hitting that time where you have issues (approx 1.01 hrs/minutes according to SD)
dropping to 24/48 will give you approx 4 hrs (4.05) of record time via 2gb mark

that would make sense if the issue was he didn't have anything after that, but this is the recording keeps going with noise imprinted on the recording.

Since he didn't say it stopped/died, I'm assuming that he has it set to 4gb files, I remember using that when I had one. The question is really, why does it have noise starting at about the 2gb mark.

additional questions for the op:

1) have you ever done 24/96 recording successfully before with this fostex?
2) if yes to 1, have you done it with this card before?
3) what are the results when you test it again?

has anyone taken the fr2le to the file limit? does it actually stop recording?
the reason i asks is...
i had my batteries die on my littlebox once, you could still hear music in the recording after the pre shut down
so if the noise has to do with the fr2le "stopping" it could still be recording but not supplying power or some other issue that caused the noise

def interested in the answers to the questions

Thanks for all the ideas. I checked my deck format first- my deck was set for a 4gb card (I was running an 8gb card) @ 24/96 which should have me covered for 3h 51m 19s. The problem (I believe) was that it was not recognizing my card properly. Is it possible to use an 8gb and (re)program it as a 4gb? or could the card be corrupt? Not sure how to get it to recognize the 8gb. I tried dialing it down to 16/48, but it still recognizes the card as 4gb.  I used this same 8gb card over the summer without issue.
When I have some more time I will run a test over the 1hr mark (on a different setting) and see if anything changes.
I'll update when I do ~ thanks again for the input.

are you formatting thew card in the fr2le?
the fr2le will only allow for one setting, in this case 24/96 to be recorded
maybe you formatted it in a different device and/or for a different setting

Yes.... you need to format the card in the deck for the sample rate/bit depth you are using... It cannot be changed thru the settings in the deck after the card is formatted.
Yes ?

I have, and yes, mine just stopped. No gapless file creation, no file with a gap, just no new file.  >:(

so, yes, I have used this card in 24/96 before.
and I always format the card in the Fostex itself.
I am switching to a 4gb card and changing settings, then going back to the 8gb card to see how/ if things change...

I'll vote for it sounds like a card error.
It's odd that you have used the same card and not had issues.
I've run a 32 Gb card in the FR2LE at 24/96 without issues.  You will always encounter the 4 GB limit issue but it should be fine until then.
once you test it with a 4 GB card, it should let you know whether it is the card or the unit but it definitely sounds more like a card issue.

the only other thing I would make sure is whether your battery life is ok after the hour.  I doubt this is the issue but worth making sure.

bvaz - when you use a 32g card, does your deck recognize it as such?

Mine gives me th option of 2g or 4g in the formatting screen, but that's it. I can not remember if when I last used the 8g card if it gave the option or recognized it as an 8g.
It does however, allow for the file size of the 8g. I put it a 4g and tried some different settings, then put the 8g, and tried the same settings again. They all came up as twice the recording length. So it does recognize and alot the proper record time for the 8g card.

This weekend I'll try multiple takes of over 1hr. and report back.

Oh, and to answer a question- When I was recording originally, I was using batteries, and there was plenty of battery life left when I shut it down.
