2005 iMac G5 intermittently won't turn on
« on: December 22, 2012, 04:04:08 PM »
Hi all. One more computer-related question: I have a 2005 iMac G5 that intermittently won't turn on. My wife had complained about it recently but it never did it for me until yesterday morning. It took me 10 minutes to get it to turn on. Should I be thinking of replacing it or it it repairable?

Thanks as usual for all the great advice from the many knowledgeable people here.

I might clean it out - dust out of heatsinks.

I might even pull and reseat the RAM - and any other slots/cards you might have.

See if that helps...not Mac specific advise... but it cant hurt.

My immediate guess is that you have an iMac that is suffering from bad capacitors. These were a common issue with a generation of iMacs, and Apple even extended the warranty on these models to address the issue.  I'd back up if you haven't already, and researching.  If it is the issue, then you can look into getting a capacitor kit and DIY if you are handy with a soldering iron.  If not, its a good time to shop for a new mac.

I know nothing about Macs, but in the PC world it's often not much more expensive to find a used motherboard than it is to replace the capacitors.  Especially if you can't solder them yourself.  I'd check on eBay for a new (used) board before I bought a new system, unless you're looking for a reason to buy a new system.

I was told by a couple of techs that it is most likely the power supply which is going out.

G5 were prone to bad capacitors in the power supply and logic board.
