DPA 4061 windscreen options or low cost alternative
« on: October 07, 2009, 11:35:38 AM »
Just curious, are windscreens available for mics of this size?

I have considered purchasing windscreen material and manufacturing a working windscreen myself.  Has anyone here taken on this project them self and/or do you have any suggestions on what material to use and where to get it?

I think those are what I got. Work like a charm. Ask the SP guys if they will work for DPA's, but I am 99% sure thats what I used. For $6 for two, unless your into the diy satisfaction, it's almost worth it to just buy em  :)

Why not simply buy the dpa windscreens made for the 4061 they work great.  I typically record without the windscreens on my 4061's at indoor shows as they are not needed.

Money is just not as plentiful as when I bought the 4061's.  Agreed that they work great indoors without.  I had used them in some low-pro type settings earlier in the fall and needed a wind screen solution for those shows.

Thanks for the low-cost suggestions.

As these mics are omnis they are not as affected by wind as cardioids and other gradient type mics are.

Like many DPA accessories, the wind screens are sort of scandalously expensive.  ~$30 for a pack of five.  $6 each for little tiny pieces of foam...

One of my local RadioShack stores is going out of business and I picked up the last 4-pack of microphone windscreens on a whim for 21 cents :)

They look big on the outside, but the cavity seems to fit my new DPA 4063 mics snugly.  Did a quick test recording off my stereo and things seemed acoustically transparent to my ears when played back on good headphones.  I've never needed windscreens before with omnis, but I figure the foam could at least protect them during transport.

I have been using tiny little ball gags on my 4061 for killer wind protection for several years now, I love them so much I never take them off and run them indoors too, they  cut down on surface noise when on my ears also, I highly recommend them, now if I could just remember where I got them  :)
