with my zone alarm all you do is let bit torrent connect to interent.  and I get 350+ (cabel though)  no need to open ports.

but you have cable probably...DSL is different most of the time. Nearly all cable modems are just bridges but most DSL modems are actually switches so they require additional configuration.

i have msn and have got DL's as high as 125, and around 90 UL, but often I get kicked competely and have to reboot the puter. More often the rate range from a low of 17 to a high of 75. The modem is a combo router for wireless, but works more often than not. Any thoughts as to how to correct? When I alt/control/delete I see the message "Bt not responding". Just curious, is it general consensus that MSN sucks? (it's suposed to be a 1.5 upgrade connection.
thanks

My understanding is that the DSL modems MSN gives you are locked down and you can't open ports.

So yeah MSN sux0rs...

Ethan: While this used to be true, the aerescom dsl "modem" my buddy chris received from MSN/Qwest was configurable and we were able to open the ports necessary to disable the bittorrnet firewall status.

This is not to imply that MSN doesn't suck 8)

Dylandenver -- if you want good dsl speeds in the denver area, I strongly recommend ditching msn and using your dsl setup with an independent ISP -- My house is around 20,000 feet from the central office (a LONG distance) and, with my upgraded service I reliably see 900k-up and 1.5mb down -- I use pcisys.net as my ISP (been using them since 1999) and have NEVER had an issue.

I opened the BT ports thru my Windows XP firewall, set my preferences on Tornado properly, and I'm still only uploading at 15kbs.  I run DSL through Verizon, not sure what brand of modem I'm running at the moment since I'm at work.  But assuming the next step to higher upload speed is to reconfigure my modem/router, how does a computer-impaired person like myself find out if I have a router or not, and how do I reconfigure my modem and/or router?

It's taking people like 2 weeks to get my shows!   :o

Thanks!

how fast can you upload using a protocol other than bittorrent.  15kb up could well be the max for your service.  dslreports.com has some bandwidth tests you can look at.

Also, it's worth confirming that the "rest of the world" is now seeing you as not being firewalled.

Easiest way to test this -- start a torrent on bt.etree.org, click the "peers [see full list]" link and find your ip address in the list of peers.  Yours will likely be red -- if the port number listed after your ip address is in parenthesis, you're still firewalled, your dsl modem/router may have a hardware firewall that needs to be unblocked as well.

Thanks!  I'm not being shown as firewalled on the torrent I'm currently uploading.

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=10990&dllist=1#seeders

I'll have to check my bandwith limit.  How do I do that exactly?

to test your speed -- go to http://speedtest.dslreports.com

you should stop all other bandwidth-related tasks before doing so (since anything else using your bandwidth would cut down on your speed)

You should also test at various times of the day and do an average.

One test is not a large enough sample.

Okay, ran the test and I have an upload speed of 130 kb/s.  So why do I upload at 15 kb/s on my bit torrents?   ???

You are confusing bits and bytes...

The speed test results are in bits and Bittorrents display is in bytes.

15 bytes * 8 bits/byte = 120 bits

therefore 120 kbps .

Since you test out at this you should cap your upload below 12 KB/s in your bittorrent window. This will assure you have enough head room for ACK packets of incoming data packets. Translation: so things go as fast as possible
