Topic: ISO of umbrella clamp

Going to be at a lot of festivals this year and I think I finally need to invest in a simple umbrella clamp.  What type of umbrella clam should I be looking for? cost?

I haven't had much luck w/ the clamp-brellas, YMMV.  I use 2 superclamps w/ an extension bar and a regular small umbrealla. 


Clamp on stand > Bar > clamp > umbrella

I used a chair brella this weekend in Indy and it worked great had to use a bit of duct tape to secure it more to the stand but overall even with the wind it worked great and for 5 bucks you cant beat that.

I use a stroller umbrella too, but you can use a c-clamp like this

Just take out the 5/8" stud and drop in the umbrella. All you need is a regular umbrella and a small screwdriver to take the handle off.

You can pick up chair umbrellas at Wal-Mart for around $10 each and they work OK.  The post is a bit long, though, so you need a good quality stand to hold it in place, especially if the wind is picking up.

I am generally not a huge fan of umbrellas on the mics due to the amount of wind resistance and noise from the drops they pick up.  If you have a poor quality or a very light stand, they also function as sails.  Use condoms fitting over the entire mic for rain protection.  If it is raining so hard to where you need to use an umbrella, it is better half the time to call it a day and just put everything away rather than risk damage to the equipment.

I've used the condom trick a few times with moderate success.  Both times I put the condom over the mic, then windscreen over the condom.  Mic stayed dry, but windscreen soaked up some water and caused HF attenuation.  Have you ever put the condom OVER the windscreen?  What concerns me is the condom will likely compress the windscreen foam slightly.  Is the windscreen even necessary when using a condom?
