24 bit on my car stereo?
« on: November 28, 2006, 09:37:36 PM »
I noticed that my stereo in my Jeep has a 24 bit dac
does this mean that I can play 24 bit with it???

 I thought you couldn't burn 24bit audio discs ???

I'm cornfused

link to player  > http://www.xplodsony.com/xplod/headunits/CDX-GT500

This is what is listed in the manual:

24-Bit Burr-Brown DAC

Take your audio to a level of clarity even Bon Jovi would be jealous of.

If you want 24 playback in your car and you aren't looking to loose and arm and a leg, or various other body parts take a peak at what I have in my ride, I'll post some pics when the snow melts somehat but this gives you an adea.

Deck:  DVA-9860  http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/products/product.php?model=DVA-9860
Amps :various alpline and JL
Front Component speakers Focal  165 V2S
JL prebuilt sub box with W2 driver...

24bit playback for less that a pair of decent home speakers an it ws installed in 1.5 days. No this won't cause a shooting match to see who's ghetto flyer rattles more shelves but my system is solid, tight musicaly satisfying and farily revealing actually.

No this doesn't mean you can play 24 bit material on your cd player.  You would need a dvd player like the one suggested by Thingol. I can give you the full technical explaination but the 24 bit number just deals with the type and quality of DAC.

Indeed the Sony is just an upconverting CD player not a 24bit DVD player. I should also note that even in my system I need to burn 24bit files as DVD-V rather than DVD-A to play on the Denon. There have been threads elsewhere speculating on the effect that has on audio quality and I'm not sure of the conculsion. As it is, I typically burn a DVD-A copy for home and a DVD-V copy for the car and the Krell SACD player at work that will play DVD-V (but not -A). I for one can't say enough how much I enjoy having 24bit files in the car. I don't use an Ipod as I really can hear a difference at both home and car between MP3, Red Book, and 24bit and I love having either the whole show on one disc (24/48) or at least the whole sets (24/96) on single discs.

Most of the Acuras have DVD-A systems standard. I started a thread here about it - http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,74590.0.html

I've had mine 2 months and love it. My only complaint is that there aren't that many DVD-A official releases produced.

Thanks guys
I didn't think it could play 24bit files I was just confused as to why there would be a 24 Bit DAC. After reading up on it , it now makes sense.  Eventually I will get with the times but for now 16 bit does the trick.
