Schoeps plastic twist vials - max. useable length?
« on: July 24, 2015, 08:35:15 PM »
Short version: how much effective length can I get from the Schoeps twist vials to store something longer, around 6 1/2 inches?

Longer version:

I store my Naiant X-Q mics in these, which are shorter versions of the Schoeps vials but otherwise the same: http://www.countycomm.com/twistvault.html

They are just barely too short to stay closed around my CM3s, so I was going to pick up a couple of the Schoeps vials made to store CMC bodies: http://www.reddingaudiostore.com/catalog/item/8157888/8838844.htm

What I need to know from those who own these is how far can you unscrew these while still having enough overlap in the plastic threads that they will stay closed?  The reason I ask is that I was going to try to put both CM3s into one vial, then when I purchase a set of OM1s (same length) put those in a second vial, and both vials then into my 2-stick cigar caddy.  The CM3 is 77mm long and I'd put a little padding in between them, so a total length of about 165mm or a little over 6 1/2 inches would be needed.

I know of the longer vials Schoeps makes for the CMIT shotguns, but those are too long to fit in the cigar caddy.
I am hitting my head against the walls, but the walls are giving way.
