Any thoughts. Tubes, 3 sets of caps, field ready power supply. Use with AKG CK6_ caps.

There is a particular tape on the LMA.... I think it's Umphrey's McGee at House of Blues in Boston...  that is unbelievable.

very nice mics, but dealing with tube power supplies at a remote venue is a PITA.

I designed the DC Power Supply for Telefunken -> Runs both mics (could handle up to 4 mics) at 7-24V DC input.

They do sound very nice and are definitely on par with the Schoeps m222 setup I have.

It's a pretty hard deal to beat at $2900 w/ 3 sets of caps.

Yes, still an option. But I have nothing on the horizon.

Any LMA links?

How are their capsules?  I wonder if they are close to Scheops, or if they are "modern" versions (ie., Chinese made).

I am pretty sure the m260 caps are made by hand at their facility in South Windsor, CT.  Every time I have been there they have been making various capsules.

very nice mics, but dealing with tube power supplies at a remote venue is a PITA.

I don't really share this opinion, but I'm a big guy so extra gear is no big deal to me.  Besides the cost, the only thing tubes mics require is another box to carry in your bag and probably another battery, although the PSU could share a battery with another box if the battery is of sufficient capacity and voltage.

It's been proven in a physics lab that tapers would go to any length, including swimming the English channel or walking the Sahara, in order to carry their own case of beer through the venue doors if allowed, so I've never been able to understand why tapers get their noses so disjointed about the extra weight of a little bit of extra gear or, say an SLA instead of a Li-ion.  :)

My batteries/bag act as ballast for my belly.  Since I add 'weight' to my belly during a show, the more stuff I have in my bag the safer I am to sail the sea of concert life.   :P

I'm sadly with norman on this one (although you are right, many tapers will go to extraordinary lengths...); I really like a nice run-n-gun style setup. If there was a 722 made in half the size, I'd probably buy it.  :P

I'm currently packing so much gear that I need 2 large bags, probably weighing close to 75 lbs. My full rig is usually 3 sets of mics (often including 414's), a dr-680, v3, a big stand, 2 small onstage stands, cables (including a few extras for that unexpected whatever), power supplies, and a bag full of adapters and other hardware. Super low profile...

The only one I found I thought the bass was very bloated and boomy. Can you provide some links to more samples?

Dig through these.... http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=telefunken%20AND%20collection%3Aetree (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=telefunken%20AND%20collection%3Aetree)

I think this one really shines.... http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2010-08-29.m260.flac16 (http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2010-08-29.m260.flac16)

There are also some down-loadable samples linked on a few threads over on gearslutz as well.

I'm not so much a fan of the recordings made in the big arena-type rooms(dead, further,etc...), but I really like the recordings made outdoors, in smaller rooms and stage lip(which covers 99% of what I record).

Thanks! The recordings with the hyper caps made by the Telefunken guy in the larger arenas are better than the show I sampled. Definitely not as boomy. I'm sure it would have been much better if it was recorded using hypers or maybe some roll off.

Edit to add: That Penns Landing recording is sick!

Jesse's is the same exact box that T'Funk is using - I could migrate Jesse's into the newer smaller box I am using now for cost of the parts (new board, XLR's, caps, box, mod cables, etc) -> about $125 (w/ newer XLR's)  -> or out $100 w/ older XLR's that are on the PS right now.

Interesting. It is a big box but it fits at the bottom of Soniccase pretty well. I kinda thought why would they use such a big box. It hardley weighs anything. If I decide to do it how small is the new box? Any pics? Thais.

H20 builds incredible pwer supplies. I see tonedeafs all the tim e for his m221b tubes, and its pretty small and compact for powering tubes IMO ;D

I can only offer this "upgrade" for Jesse's unit at this time as his was the prototype (I built it).

I maybe able to offer this to the regular t'funk m260s but I need to talk to them first.

I would also need to charge labor for other units.

Ran again last night for Moe/Keller at Club Nokia in LA, under this balcony with the hypers.. This time with the ad2k+...... m260>V3>AD2k+. so far really nice sound!!. The cables that come with it i need to tame, i need to techflex them or something, any ideas? they are really nice heavy duty, they are thicker than normal XLR cables. right now they are just the 2 raw cables but would ilke to get them into one single loom somehow.

I had Jesse's pair for a couple weeks and really liked them. They certainly gave my MG's a run for their money.

The Club d'Elf show I did with the omni's is the best of the bunch. On archive I think. Don't have a link handy, but a quick search of the kickdown will give ya all I did with them.

Very cool. Ya those cables are kinda bulky. Got a pic of the new ones you made?

Not until I find a 6 conductor milspec cable. There could be some thinner standard mic cable out there.  I did the same thing when I bulit a 8pin cable for my c422.  I think I used 2 3-condutor and 1 2-conductor to get the 8 conductors needed.

Got it. what i have works fine, but it would be cool to have the thinner milspec cable forsure. let me know if you ever find it.

You only need 4 conductor plus shield - I use mogami mini quad for my m260's and it works fine

The m260 only needs five conductors:
1. signal -
2. signal +
3. +120v
4. +6v
5. ground

If you tie ground to shield four conductors has you covered

This is what Ryan at Telefunken set me.  Five conductors but not the same pin assignment as you listed (unless you were listing the number of conductors and not there corresponding pin assignment).

Hello,

Here's the pinout information as we discussed on the phone for the ELA M 260 cable.

ELA M 260 Pinout:

1.   B+ Voltage (120V)
2.   Heater Voltage (6.0V) - use heavier conductor if available
3.   No Contact in mic - a conductor is still run, but can be left out if one less conductor is available
4.   No Contact in mic - a conductor is still run, but can be left out if one less conductor is available
5.   (+) Audio
6.   (-) Audio
7.   Circuit Ground - use heavier conductor if available
Shield.  Cable Shielding

In the PSU, the circuit ground is tied to the cable shielding.

This pinout is sent pin-to-pin from PSU to the mic, therefore is the same pin assignments coming out of the PSU as is coming into the mic.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Glad to hear you are enjoying the 260's!

Thanks,

Can anyone who purchased a pair recently say if they have slimmed down the PS enclosure yet?  If they haven't I am going to speak with Alan and explain this needs to happen.

When I designed the PS I designed it as a prototype - I chose the enclosure (which is what they are using) based on the need 4 5 XLR's and for more room in case needed - I did not expect them to use that enclosure in the final product

After the 2 proto's I built (one for you Jesse and one for T'Funk) I moved to the smaller hammond 1455 series ditched the two mic XLR's infavor of locking DIN connectors and came up with the version seen here below

There is no real reason they couldn't move to this or a similar enclosure

I personally have a quad channel version running off one of these enclosures (1 pair of m260's and 1 pair of m221's)

Thanks, Richard.

ard you ok with me showing this enclosure to t-funk and suggesting it? I think this field set gains a lot the smaller the PS.

I'd still like to move mine to a smaller box, but I've been sidetracked with other things.

Thoughts?
Jesse

you can talk to them - I haven't been in contact for a few years and currently my business is closed (although I am still looking to build a few more PS's for people - one for a um69, one for a pair of AKC c61's and one for a pair of u67's)

Cool, the community will appreciate it I think if we can slim this thing down.  :)

I found a bunch of 1455 models when I did a google search; do you know what the dimensions are of the one you selected?  Would you be so kind to elaborate on the parts you used? Is there a DIN to 7 pin adapter needed?

Thanks!
Jesse

The like most mono tube mics, the m260 only needs 5 conductors to run

They may want to choose a 5 or 7 pin din instead of the ac701 "standard" locking 6 pin as shown in the picture

The enclosure I use is:
http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=1455P1601BKvirtualkey54600000virtualkey546-1455P1601BK

I also don't mount the board on standoffs but instead use the board guides on the sides

pm Jesse Hurlburt.  He ran (or is still running) those mics.

There is a particular tape on the LMA.... I think it's Umphrey's McGee at House of Blues in Boston...  that is unbelievable.

I was going to suggest the MMJ tape he did, that was also fantastic.

^ This!!

That MMJ show is my single favorite show on the LMA and is on regular rotation! :)

Thanks, Richard!

So is the ac701 the female input on the box? What would you need on the male mic cable end to connect in to that input?  Sorry, not at all familiar with that connector.

Thanks for helping!  ;D

Ted & I were just talking about this a few weeks ago. The power supply looks like it could be much smaller. While it's not that big now it looks like it would easily fit into a smaller encloser like Richard did. The current size works in my bag but if Telefunken did it make it smaller I bet they'd get more traction out on the street.

While we are on the power supply discussion, mine came with a giant 16v battery, Ted runs his off of a 9v Tekeon, does the power supply work off any voltage from 9v to 16v? I'm thinking of going with a smaller battery to save some weight.

I picked up one of the Tekkeon 3300's & wondering how long it will power the PS?
