I recently built a version of the greenmachine DIY battery box (seen on the Live Recording section of forums.minidisc.org). I know that it "works" in the sense that I get a stereo signal from the mics through it and into my recorder. Now I'd like to test it to see if it is adding or taking away anything from the recordings I make using it (i.e. unintended bass rolloff, crosstalk, noise). Is there a reliable way that I can check this? Any other sorts of tests that are recommended before I record an "important" show with it?

Other than listening and closely examining in a good audio editor I can think of no way that does not involve expensive gear. :(

Not an expert here... but a suggestion... what I would do.
- Find a cheap expendable CD player... like the old generic diskman at the bottom of the kids toybox...
- play a CD out from that into your battery box, like it was mics, and record into your recorder. Yes, you are feeding 9V into the output of the CD player... which isn't a good idea, but I don't THINK it will fry the CD player short term. If I'm wrong, that's why I said use a cheap expendable CD player. ;D
- take your recording and compare to the original looking for artifacts.
