big ups 1st of all to my boy cliff(ashevillian)for the sweet deal on the m audio 2496!

I have never opened up any of my boxes in the past so I'm stepping into a whole new realm
here and want to make sure I won't f0ck anything up.go ahead and laugh now

will it be obvious where I need to plug it in when I do pop the top or being a virgin at this
will I be lft standing here going

or should I just wait for my frind josh to come down
and hook me up in a couple weeks when he can swing by? I'd really like to play around with
this thing but don't want to wind up having to buy a new hard drive or something.

and yes,I do know enough to shut off the computer and unplug if before I get started

Mark,

First thing. It is easy...all you need is a little instruction on what to do. You will not fuck anything permanently by trying any of this except by eletrical static The most important thing is to get a wrist grounding device so you do not shock anything and fry it, or touch the computer case or metal frame every 10-20 seconds to discharge excess charge.

What OS are you running? You got onboard sound (sound from your mother board or a seperate soundcard in the PCMCIA slots)? If you have onboard sound (usually in cheaper computers), you gotta disable after you set everthing up with the new card.

Do you have the CD ROM that comes with it? If not grab the latest drivers from M-Audio's website (save them to your drive, make note of where they are). Turn off the computer and plug the card in (make sure the card is seated well in the slot for this is a common mistake of not seating the card properly), after you restart, the computer asks you that it has found a new device, you need to point out where the drivers are to it when it asks (of course you remembered where you DLd them to or point out the CD loaded in your tray if you have that).

When you have done all this, go to control panel and select sound and audio devices. Choose your recording device to be the new AP2496 card. Then use something simple like CDWave to capture (again in options you must specifiy that you are choosing the new AP2496 card to do the recording). You need to tweak with the M-Audio card mixer controller, specify the sample rate, lock clock to audio device and the I/O designation (I forgot how that looks and where it shows up....I just remembered to make a shortcut to my start up tray). If you get sound recorded, it is a start. Once we get there and there are problems like pops and shit, we'll figure all that out when the problem arises.

Just go for it, you are not gonna fuck anything up beyond repair.

I guess I have onboard sound

it's just an emachine so I wouldn't guess anything else
so if I understand you right andy I just shove the card into an empty slot make sure it's
seated good and close her up making sure the whole while to keep a good ground or
discharge off my static so often. if that's the case then piece of cake,it's a start.

and yes I did get the driver cd's with it but we'll deal with all that after I plug it in and
turn the compuetr back on,thanks.

The drivers on the cd will most likely work fine but it's usually a good idea to use the most recent ones from the M-Audio website...I forgot to mention that before. As for physically installing the card in the box...it's just legos. It can only fit (easily) in one type of slot (PCI)

Also I would disable the onboard sound before you shut down to install the card. (if i remember correctly...My Computer > Device Manager > select the onboard sound > right click - disable)

okay,so I got into device manager and click on the audio and disabled SoundMAX digitsl
intergrated audio,it was the only thing of all the audio thingys that had a disable come up
and so far it seems to be it so I guess I'm going to power down and crack this baby open $:-\$

damn,that was easy! had josh on the phone walking me through just in case.I used
the driver disc and will go to m-audio for updates,it loaded and when it was done a
little window popped up and said new hardware was installed and ready for use so I
guess I need to go find it and see for sure.

edit: so everything is installed and I have an m-audio delta control panel down on my
tool bar and it opens up so I can make those changes but when I open the control
panel>sound and audio devices when it shows the volume there is no way to adjust it
for the speakers,making sense?

My card (Delta Dio 2496) has it's own control panel to control I/O levels. there should be a little pyramid M-Audio icon in the tray. Double click that and it should bring up a control panel. Perhaps the same for you?

yeah steve,I have that but not sure what to do with it once I click it and it pops that screen up,looks like what
you posted.

edit:when I go in to device manager and look @ this thing it says it's not "digitally signed" and windows is telling me
it needs to be in order to work,so what do I do?

I have no idea what that means...

I wish I could be of more help but I don't have a Windows system in front of me and I've forgot alot of Microsoft stuff since I went to Mac.

edit: actually one thing that might help is some screenshots so we can see what you are seeing. ~~I think the Windows shortcut is Ctrl + PrtScn~~....someone else correct me if this is wrong. alt + prtscn

It's Alt+Print Screen (PrtScn) ...and I can totaly understand the whole Mac transition thing. My very thoughts, as I have to be at the (Windows) box to remember where everything is.

okay okay. so after doing some reading over at m-audio in the knowledge base it appears
I messed up by installing the card and then trying to download the drivers which apperently
doesn't work

soo I unplugged the card,plugged the comp back up and went back to m-audio and downloaded
the updated drivers,shut off the comp and plugged the card back in and hooked everything back
up and completed the install as instructed and I now have my control panel back

so I am going
to leave it alon until someone tells me what settings to make in everything so I don't screw up
again

so after another phone call to the all knowing it appears I need to plug my speakers into the
soundcard and not the stock port in the box like before

jeez cliff you could have told me
this when I was at your house yesterday

so luckily I had a rca>mini cable and a barrell and low and behold I have sound from my speakers
again!!

so now to figure out how to get some transfering done

Congrats, Mark!! One thing to watch when transferring is that the bit/sample rate settings on M-Audio control panel and in the software you're using to record the transfer match the bit/sample rate of the source. Otherwise you'll get a message like "source not found" or something like that.

Also, occasionally, Windows being the wonderfully stable environment that it is (

), you will get a message after a reboot that says to the effect that the M-Audio panel was not found or did not start, and the control panel icon fails to appear in the tray. In my case, all I have to do is find the tray icon executable, double-click and it starts up, no problem. On my system, the file is named delttray.exe; and it's located in the system32 folder.

Yikes! I never had that happen...

Mark, you are pretty much there...

Damn. I had a bunch of screenshots that I found describing how to set up the AP2496. I guess the owner of the page I linked them from didn't like that and took them down or moved them. Sorry!

Well that was going to be my next suggestion. Just put in a tape and start playing it...then start changing the settings until you hear sound. Honestly, when I first got into transferring and got my 1st soundcard that's exactly what I did...I had no clue what to do and learned pretty much everything by trial and error. There really isn't anything that you can fuck up by changing software settings...you can always change it back the way it was if it's not right.

its been a couple of years since I used the Audiophile but I can probably walk you through it.

the Audiophile control Panel should be pretty much identical to what SteveJ posted earlier in the thread.
What you need to do is make a couple of presets that you can load:
1-transferring from digital source
2-playback from internal harddrive
sounds like you've heard sounds from the speakers so you have the hardware setup correctly.

start off by setting up your standard playback preset. open up a media player(winamp, itunes, real, wmp, etc) and play a file.
when you have everything working click "save" on the control panel and label it something self-explanatory. if you will be playing multiple sample rates you might want to set up 2 playback presets, 1 for 44.1 and the other for 48.

once you have your playback presets created hook up the digital source you want to transfer and the recording app you will use.
go ahead and hit play on the source and record on the app. in the control panel you will have to set the clock source to spdif or external. now match up the sample rate to the source (this is crucial to avoid the "slow" or "chipmunk" sound - the Audiophile does not auto sync sample rate). on the "monitor mixer" tab, unmute everything and drag the levels all the way up. on the "patchbay/router" tab will have to select various settings...if I remember correctly, you need to change 1 setting on the left and 1 on the right. make a change then check if the recording app is showing levels. this is more crucial than if you can hear the digital source. once you get levels showing in the app and you can hear it over the speakers, click save and name it something obvious...again, make a second preset with an alternate sample rate.

when I used this card I had 8 different presents created:
digi in 44.1
digi in 48
analog out 44.1
analog out 48
digi out 44.1
digi out 48
anaolg in 44.1
analog in 48

its alot easier to just load>select prest than to manually change the control panel settings everytime you did something

so I have sound from the dat to my speakers!!

I went through the tabs and changed settings until the music stopped or
the sound changed so the way I have it now it seems to be kosher

so it looks like my next step is to open cd wave editor and try to record to my
harddrive

Do a small sample b4 you commit to a whole transfer (like 10-20 min). Listen to that carfeully with headphones when it is done (don't blaze b4 hand, really listen to it). You do not want any glitches, like static or pops....even one is unacceptable (you need to make sure it is not crowd noise or other ambient stuff...that is why you want a clear head)! Make sure your rate sample setting are what you actually recorded or it will sound slow or fast depending (if you did 48khz, set the card at 48 and CDWave editor to 48).

a simple d/l of the latest media player solved my no sound problems on playback
so now it seems that is working in all the right areas and since then(yesterday)I
have managed to pull down a phish show and I'm on my 2nd MMW show right now
pretty easily with only one call to verify something.

so tuesday is my day off this week and I'm going to dedicate it to picking out one
of my tapes,transferring it and starting my 1st torrent.

Yup, after you stop the show it automatically saves the whole shows wave.
After you cut it up you can just kick it out in FLAC, and if you want
you can go back and save it again in WAV if you need to burn it to disc.

I'm also an Audiophile & CD Wav user. Taping buddy sends me DATs taped in LP mode (bad bad, I know; I'm strictly a 41,000 taper).
I cannot figure out how to record these to PC. I know that LP mode is 32000 Hz and 12 bit.
Is 12 bit the problem with CD Wav? I would be very grateful for suggestions. I have both the Audiophile Firewire and the 2496. TIA
