i'm picking one up for my living room. gone is the large hi-fi, enter the cheesey cheap HT.

i'm leaning towards the JVC THC50 http://tinyurl.com/raxj3
as its got DVDA support and up conversion of DVDs to 1080i.

My budget is twice this, but I can't really find anything that looks "better".

anyone have suggestions?

how are you possible going to be pleased with something of this nature after the system you're familiar with? check out the b&w 6 series surround setups? they're expensive but they might be more pleasing to your ears.

i never said this was going to be my "reference system".
just the living room HT.

I'm planning on a Manley Stingray > VR1 rig as my "mini". Even then, i'll miss 20hz bass, i'm sure.
still, its a quality system. very quality. even w/my killer deals on this gear it still freakin' expensive.

actualy saw something decent today.
it was an onkyo system. reciever..7.1 and the speakers to go w/it. MUCH nicer than any crap best buy stuff.
it was $480.
then add stands for the front monitors, cable and a source. probably $700 in total.

or...
a $400 all in one POS panasonic or JVC.
its just background music and movies.

damn..no matter how much I try and psych myself up for this...... it ain't flyin.

Sorry about the boombox jpg...I couldn't resist. Have you considered a used two-channel setup for the TV? I find two decent channels of audio is more interesting than the 'HT in a box' sound any day of the week. Less clutter and a higher wife-approval factor, too.

I'm with Chris on this one. I ditched the surround set up for tv and movies years ago and have not looked back. My only gripe is that more dvds don't come with 2.0 audio as an option. A lot do but most are surround only.
If your set on an all in one box have you checked out Denon's 301 and 101 systems? They only come with two speakers and a sub but are supposed to give the surround effect. The 301 is the pricier of the two but also does DVD-A and SACD.

agreed...I wish it would sound good from a multitude of angles...would love to get out of running cables all over the place for proper surround sound

don't know of exact models, but supposedly there are some pretty good wireless systems out there for the rear surrounds.

the way to go is to have the speaker cable snaked through the wall during framing and mounting speakers. I have flat white speaker cable that i wrapped around the door frames and nailed to the baseboards and run to the speakers. it's painted the same color as the wall where it's exposed. you really don't know it's there. runs to these that are mounted high on the wall, people never notice them until you hear em.

I paid Ryland $750 for the pre-wired for surround sound speakersoption and have yet to buy the speakers to hook the wires up to. After the fact, someone told me I should have just found out what day they were putting in the drywall and showed up a day earlier and wired it myself and saved the $750.

yeah, that is my goal...all depends on the timing of when I sell my house and if I buy a house already constructed or in build stage
