Decommissioning gear for a while
« on: March 19, 2020, 03:19:35 AM »
Nothing to record, remove the batteries so they don't leak! Peel off all the gaff tape too. (leaves residue if left too long)

HEY this MixPre6 thinks it's a USB sound card with a red button!?! Okay then... guess it DOES have a digital in!

Stay safe, folks! #UseSoap #StayHome

Good reminder, thanks. Though I did use my M10 yesterday to record vocals for my friend's "we're postponing our wedding" announcement song!

Here's a good article on how to properly store batteries.

Not sure if I'll go through their recommendation to charge my Lithium batteries to 40%, but I will put them down in the basement where it's cooler.

It's also a good time to clean / treat all of your connections.  I swear by Caig DeOxit.  This bottle is the best value I have found.

NON-Hazardous??? They changed the formula?? That's great news! This stuff was always the best, but the old version was pretty toxic!

it's carcinogenic. Wash your hands (popular nowadays) and don't inhale the vapors. Use in web-venilated area.

Are you certain that the D100L was toxic, or could it be another one of their products? Mine is very old (late 90s) and says, 'nonflammable/nontoxic environmentally safe' on the label.

On topic: I was thinking that there may be better opportunities to record ambience/nature sounds with less background noise (cars, planes, etc).

I learned about it in the 1980. Was told it was nasty. Never actually looked at the MSDS for it though, but here's the weblink.

You linked the MSDS data for discontinued products.  Here's the link to the current ones:
http://store.caig.com/s.nl/sc.20/category.291/.f

Specific link to D100L, the stuff I use:

^ According to the MSDS, the only concern is getting it in your eyes.  The sheet also states that it is 0% VOC, so no vapor inhalation risk.

Yeah, I was searching for the toxic one, but didn't see it. I don't ever recall reading the MSDS for Deoxit, but I do recall that the package had some stern warnings.
*I might be recalling wrong!

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Intraclean S-711 which was 1,1,1-TCE?

It could be that is the case, and I'm recalling Caig because it was the safer solution?!? But Interclean is a tape head cleaner not a contact cleaner/deoxidizer...
I *am* getting older (beats the alternative), and had some confusion accessing a detailed memory the other day. I had better take a walk to stay fresh!

Remember the aerosol spray cleaner for mixer faders that had graphite powder in it?  Pretty sure that stuff was all kinds of toxic.

I guess worldwide there's not so much live music going to be happening for a while.  (Though my jazz musician nephew living in Tokyo seems still to be getting plenty of gigs, which not only surprises me but alarms me).  Well, rather than decommissioning, maybe now's the time to walk or drive to a park, if that's permitted where you are, or out into the countryside, and record some birdsong or whatever to bring home and help to bring the wide open spaces into your house.

A couple of days ago our Prime Minister was holding an outdoor press conference.  You could hardly hear what he was saying due to magpies singing away nearby, trying to go live nationwide.  It made a strange contrast with the politicians solemn words and warnings.

And of course now's the time to hit the 'play' button.  Recording can be an almost compulsive thing, whereby you record tons of stuff, but rarely actually play it.

Nature walks are definitely an option. Nobody around to look at you funny for your giant Rycote Zeppelin or whatever!?
I'm enjoying using my MixPre for a USB interface but it's total overkill. I wish I could control Stereo Output gain with the scroller knob (headphone knob) while viewing levels. Might have to experiment with different settings. I'd settle for controlling a linked pair with a single front panel knob. Just nice to have a physical volume control handy in case of insane dynamics or perhaps a phone call. I can always go turn down the stereo...

I'm spending my downtime transferring DATs for a person I've never met.

I cleared out my main gear bag and got everything nice and tidy.Batteries stored properly and cables all wrapped. My GFs 12 year old asked me how long it would be if I attached all my cables end to end. My GF just laughed and laughed
