Omni configs
« on: April 02, 2004, 09:47:08 AM »
What are some other ways to run omni's besides split? Are there other configs you can use that don't require you to spread them mant feet apart? ORTF? NOS?

And isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, ooh ooh ooh, the sky is the limit!

with omnis the best way, imho, is to split them.  when you are pushing them in a direction you really dont get the direction because they are, well, omni directional :-)

that's what I was thinking, with a pick up pattern like that angle, etc really means nothing. On to the next subject, what is a good bar to use to run split omni's, don't have time for the home made stuff...what works that is out there to buy?

There was a discussion about this a few weeks ago (too lazy to find the thread) but here's the low-down....

Healy method. Two omnidirectional microphones placed 180* w/ capsules at about ear distance apart.

NO! That's not a stick man! It's a damn pair of microphones :D  omnidirectional ones at that (look at the 0's)

Good luck

Yes.  they form a straight line.

The only problem with this is if you're running pencil mics you've got to have them at least the length of the mics apart, but since i think we're talking abuot creekfreek's new TL's, i don't think it's really an issue...

so that is roughly 17cm, just like an ORTF (ortif) with the caps pointed out, interesting. The omnis I have done have been about 5 feet apart kinda *pointed* towards the stage

That's just regular spaced omni's is it not?

Found this bit in my bookmarks from the oade site

haha, or listen to Moke, if i remember correctly, that's how the last (and maybe other) omni placement discussions ended... :P

I'm yet to try it, but Moke isn't the only one i've heard swear by it...

critically palced omni's are for single diaphragm omnis, not intended for dual d. LD's.
J-Disc it! amazing results!!

that requires actual work on my part. Do you have the pictures of blumlein you used to have moke?

nice pics mike... i'm far too lazy lately to go through that work... what have been the responses from those around you from not only flying big-ass mics, but a giant block of wood between them?

For Blumlein, I think that Brian Costigans Shure Bar mod is the way to go. It's much lighter than the rig I've been using.
I've been combining a Shure Bar, and a 4 mic t-bar.

fetching.....

is this somewhere? I think I may have missed it
