Microphone Stand Preference?
« on: August 04, 2005, 10:53:50 AM »
I have a Manfretto microphone stand that is very compact and is good for stealthing, but I am looking for a heavier duty stand, that will extend past 7'. I always end up clamping onto someones heavier duty stand when I am an the Tapers secton. I love my stand but I would like to be able to go to 8' or 9' in some situations, and be a little more sturdy. I have a birthday coming up, and somebody wants to know what they can buy me. Do you all have any preferences? Links would be appreciated.

Thank You, Coloartist

I have a bogen 3320 for travel/fob and one of these off ebay(item 7534930582).

I have had 10+ sets of mics on the 13 footer.
There are also some good bogen options like the 3322, 3336,
MK 4V > KCY 250/5 Ig (KS 10I)  > VST62IUg > 722

Looks pretty nice, especially for $47.00. 3-way tip on the end, and 13'. Anybody else ?

You guys seem to go for those stands with the legs that stick out to the side a lot..guess thats OK in a taperssection, but what about when you're FOB, don't people trip over them?

Any mic stands suitable for FOB, with legs that lay flat (or nearly flat) on the floor, preferably black, and 7-8' high?

Next I've got to find somewhere with them in the UK..

Cheers

Humbug, You just described my Manfretto Stand, excactly. I cut a little off the ends of each of the 3 bottom legs, and they can go totally flat to the floor. I will take a photo at lunch.

Great FOB stand.

Yes, thats a problem for me. I sometimes put chairs on either side of it and set the stand up so that the legs dont stick out as far. This of course makes it less stable. I'll also tape the legs down. It doesnt really keep it down but at least i know if the stand has been disturbed while I was away.

I've thought about using christmas lights to wrap around the legs so people will see them however, that solution has many drawbacks.

I've never seen those w/ the flat legs. do you have any pics?

Bogen Options. Anybody have these. The legs look like they can go fairly flat.

Go to eBay and search for "light stands". Amvona is a one that's on there a lot. I got my stand through them, and it was only $25 with shipping. 9', air cushioned. Big foot print, but in the section it's fine. There's actually a lot of 6 9 footers on there right now with a current bid of $36. Ends in 2 hours:

Thats the stand I want to get. But if you lowered those legs all the way to the ground you've got a something like a 2.5 food diameter footprint that the thing wil take up. It seems like the legs would still be in the way.

Yes, big foot print, but remember, you can adjust ow far out you put the legs. Yes you loose some stability, but that's what duct tape is for!  ;)

Seriously, it's not that bad. I've seen worse. And if you are in a small section, have folks pull in tight. The distance is perfect for my back to fit in between two of the legs.

at dmb at the gorge there was a HUGE beach ball. damn thing was over 3' tall when you set it on the ground and it had glow sticks (like they sell to put around your neck, etc) in it. needless to say it got too close to the stand and had to suffer the consequences. we took the glow sticks as our spoils and taped them to the mic stand and became the most colorful tapers in the place.

Born Again- That is 6 stands for $36.00 right now. That would definatly be a good deal. It will probably doulble at the end of the Auction, but would still be a great deal if they are any good. Do you know if the mount could be changed to a threaded mount? 9' should do fine.

It appears to be the same stand I got from them. All (I think all) light stands have to have an adaptor in oder to be used as we do:

And as I understand it, if the current bidder wins, he's getting 6 stands for a total of $36.

You can get them almost anywhere. It's a Manfrotto 3102 Rapid Adaptor. Google it. Some common places ts'ers use:

micsupply.com
bhphotovideo.com
cascademedia.net

etc etc etc

I've got the Bogen 3336...works great!  Lightweight, not too bulky to carry around but still pretty stable even when run at 11-12'

Closed length of 59", or 5 FEET is "not too bulky"?  We have very different perspectives on what's too bulky!  My 3373 closes up to 19" - love it! - but unfortunately is not stable enough for my AKG 414s.  So...currently looking for a stand that's 20-30" closed (shorter the better since it's gotta fit on the back of my m/c) and gets the mics up ~8-10' or so.

Wow ! 59" .  My stand folds to 19" after a little modification. It is a Bogon Manfrotto 3373. But it is only 6' with the legs near flat, and 7' raised.

...I still think that's "not too bulky," but it's just me.

EDIT:  Funny that the Bogen chart says that the folded up length is 59".  Either I can't read my label on my stand or the guy I got this from modded it.

Weird.

Another fluff for the Dynatran stand from Amvona.com  I paid $10.51 + shipping when I won my eBay auction.  Yeah it's big, but it's sturdy and air-cushioned.  The price is right too - just watch the auctions for a cheap one.  I got my adapter from micsupply.com

Hope you were able to jump on one of those 2 auctions listed. The single one ended at $8.xx and the lot of 6 went for $78.xx.

I ran into this same issue when I purchased my 3336 too. One site had it listed as 59" closed and another site had it listed as 39.5" closed. Ended up purchasing from the cheaper site, which reported it as 59" closed and sweated it out (preparing to send it back) until it arrived at a closed lenght of 39.5". I informed the vendor of the mistake, but it appears that it still hasn't been corrected on the Bogen charts. They have probably missed several sales opportunities because of this misinformation.

Nope, I didn't get one from the auctions. I kept raising my bid, and then ran out of time. It seemed like he has alot more auctions coming up, so I didn't really worry about it to much. I am still trying to figure out which stand goes 9'-11' or so high, and is short enough folded up to go on my taping  gearpack (Mountainsmith Camera Pack). It holds a tripod on each side.

It is 22" tall, but I could easily go to 28"-30", without to much sticking out the top.
