I run AKG 300's (usually hypers but also with cards) with a brand new Apogee MiniMe, at times my low end sound, and even midrange sound, is muddled and lacks clarity, so I am considering upgrading to AKG 480's, I am wondering if I just have the wrong prepamp/converter for AKG mics, does anyone out there know? I would appreciate the insight of some of you experienced tapers, thanks, G

Sell the Akg and pick up some Gefell's that will clean up the low end give you better overall sound and go good with the MME.

What kind of configurations do you normally run?

The big low end on the MMe seems to be every body's first complaint.
480's would help out a lot. Also, running xy tends to roll a little bass off. I used to run 393 and loved 'em. But as soon as I got my 460's it was night & day, and 480's sound even better than 460's.

thanks for your input, I strictly run an ORTF or modified ORTF configuration, I find it produces a much more lively sound, I hear the 480s will really capture and clarify the low end sound that the 390's can't, any thoughts

I ran the 480's with a MMe and that was an excellent combo. Would probably be my second choice to what I run now.
-
i noticed the muddiness too. except i was running 391->UA5(wmod). solution: 480's. i really didn't like the low end of the 391's.

I run the 480's into a minime and love the sound. Also have to agree that the 480s would be a great solution.
edit: You might also want to try to run a different mic config. like a mod din or something <-thats what I used to mainly run with the 391's

Hi, The answer to your question is, "NO." If you are getting those results, specifically muddy midrange, when running hypers, there must be something other than the mme that is wrong (this assumes that the 393s are at least in the range of 483s with respect to bass response and that you weren't taping in a jail cell). And if you like the AKG sound, get the 480s...I recently got a 391 Ratdog tape of a show where I taped with some 483s. The clarity difference was amazing, not to mention the boominess difference (albeit, some or much of which muddiness had to attributable to the hypers versus the cards). And then I got an AKG 568 (shotguns with amazing bass response) copy of the same show. Those are some nice shots...significantly better bass response than the 483s (muddy, even, depending on your playback system ). Again, though, the clarity of the 480s was noticeable. As a result of this characteristic, I think you should seriously consider keeping the mme and buying some 480s. Good luck and let us know what you do. (disclaimer: I am selling some 480s on the used gear page).

Fuck the 480's. Get a pair of 460's and have them modified by Jim Williams. Cheaper than 480's and sound better. Much more detailed bass than the 480's.

go 480 or mod 460 and let us hear that combo, sure to please.... 8)

I find the mini-me only sounds tubby first of all, in 16 bit using uv22hr, and secondly, with lower end mics. Upgrade those mics and the tub will go!

ortf is the last config i would run with that combo. din will tighten up the bass a little, xy moreso

Yo EA, I think the mod 460s sound like stock 390s. ;D

thanks to all who replied, I appreciate your insight and guidance, I am keeping the MiniMe and upgrading to 480's, it will be hard to sell my 393's but they gotta go, see you all in the taper's pit

YEEAAHHHH. +T YOU'LL LOVE IT! ;D

I absolutely love my 480s -> MineMe
I've got a couple shows up on the archive with this combo (Uncle Sammy gigs) if you're interested in checking them out. I also think I'm going to use some of my Phish masters from this past run to check out seeding with Bit Torrent. I've been u
sing it for a bit, now but haven't bothered to setup a box to actually seed with it, yet.
I'll definately post a link on this board if I'm successful.
