Topic: Neumann KM100 and the -10dB pad

just got some new toys and had a question about the -10dB pad.

i've ran a borrowed pair for few shows and i ran the pad feeding my mv100 preamp, but i did notice that i had to turn up my M1's record dial a bit higher than usual.

so my question to km100 users... do you run the pad all the time?

I think that with the mv100 you need to run the pad... my memories a bit hazy as I haven't run that combo in a while but  I think that's correct.

I would definitely run the pad on the km140s when using the MV100.  The km140s run as hot as the km184s, which I used to use with the MV100.  And most rock shows would put you on the edge of clipping the MV100 with this combo.  To get around it first I made my own -10db attenuator cables to run with the km184s (which BTW don't have a -10db pad available) and then I mod'd the MV100 to provide less gain.

Bottom line, probably no need to run the -10db pad on the km140s with most mic preamps, but keep it engaged when you're running the MV100.

thanks for everyone's comments.  i'm definitely thinking of modding my mv100 to step down the lowest gain (20dB) down to 10dB. i just replaced the mic preamp chip with the 2019 chips and looking forward to testing it out with the new mics.
