Remote recording stereo mic set, opinions?
« on: October 22, 2004, 09:47:48 PM »
Hello friends,
My name is Travis Sluss I run a small recording studio in New York; I have mostly experience with close micing. I recently bought the Marantz flash recorder and I already own a Grace Design Lunatec V3 with battery. I’m planning on taking a lot of time off this next year to travel around America and Europe to cities and record local music at different sized venues and outdoors. I'm looking for a cheap pair of stereo mics for me to start off with for less than $800/pair. Eventually I'm probably going to get a set of Earthworks, but I want a cheaper back-up and/or alternative. I was looking at the NT4, but I'm hearing bad things on this board, and I can only use it as a stereo mic. Obviously because I have a studio, If i can use these mics in other situations that would also be great.
Any opinions? Are DPAs too expensive? I like how small the Audix M1245s are, how do they sound? Thanks
Travis

how about the studio projects stereo mic? jonny just sold one i bewlieve :)

dpa miniatures that people mainly use for stealth recording, are even more than your $880 alotment, i think theyre 900.

i hear the audix micros are quite nice, the 1290's sounding somewhat similar to a 'small' akg 480 :)

for ~800 you could get a new set of ADK TL's  or search the used gear section here for many other options in your price range.  I would recommend finding some  ??? > V3 tapes that you like and use those to make your decision.   Dont forget to budget for a gear bag, extra batteries, shockmounts, more flash memory.

DPA's are always a good choice IMHO but for the price of those you could pickup a set of SR77's
