I'm sure there is a thread about this device so redirect me if need be. But I have some questions about it. Say I have a band mic'ed out ...say...6 mics. Now if these 6 mics are coming into the motu then firewire into my laptop (would the channels be separated in the software?) if I try and route those same mics mixed to stereo or say to six different speakers real time ... can I do that without latency issues. Basically is this device a multi track studio/portable mixer? I'm looking for hands on input not just manufacturer specs. Thanks in advance!

I have a ultralite MKII
it rocks!

It only has 2 mic pre's
so you would need 4 (or 2 stereo) more mic pres for what you are suggesting
it will record in the supplied AudioDesk software
6 separate channels and you can post mix
also you get a sweet little app called Cue mix you can make separate mixes to separate pairs of outs for multiple stereo mixes- or a 6 channel surround sound mix
check out the motu forum on the MOTU site
it is for both multi track and can be used w/o a computer as a standalone mixer- but I think you would then be better off with an allen & heath mixer or the like..
you can mix with e the controls on the unit, however it is not as handy as when it's connected firewire to a computer- Mac
if you have a Mac MOTU is the way to go - unless you can get a Metric Halo
but if you need more mic pres you might look at the MOTU traveler- with 4 pres
or ditch the lappy all together for the cost and go with the new 6 channel tascam recorder - DR-680

Very good help thank you! So you may have answered my questions or at least some of them :-) So I guess what I really want to know is...... can i use 6 ins and 6 outs at the same time and record @ 24/96 all at once with out latency? And I guess one could eq the band on the fly and send the full mix to an amp and then to a pair of speakers, or send individual tracks to the musician as a monitor source?
