Why the ever larger, ever more inexpensive storage fascinates me, I don't know.
Between 1000 to 4000 hours of high quality music.
A waking year of non-stop tunes. (365 days, 12 hours a day, FLAC of CD quality or better)
I'm being conservative on my guestimate.
That's a bunch o' music...

Why the ever larger, ever more inexpensive storage fascinates me, I don't know.
While it's true that long term prices have fallen historically, this year has been the exception to the rule.
There is a new cryptocurrency called Chia which runs on what is called Proof Of Storage, and so large capacity hard drives and fast SSD's have been going at a premium, much like graphics cards have been very competitive due to Proof Of Stake mining (used for the Ethereum cryptocurrency.)
In March of 2021 I bought a 14TB drive for $232 from Best Buy. That works out to a little over $16.50/TB.
18 TB for $500 is more like $27.75!
I was buying 8 TB drives for $135 before this spring's price spike. That's still under $17/TB but now those same 8TB drives go for $180-200 which is $22.50-$25/TB.

When I got into computing, circa 1981, retail hard drive prices were as follows, as I recall:
5MB $1000
10MB $1500
20MB $2000 (this is $100/MB... 1GB would cost $100,000, & 1 TB would cost $100,000,000 at this rate!?)
$10,000 for 10MB. That's $1 million/TB
In fact, that math works out to $1 million per GIGABYTE which puts a TB at a cool Billion!

Not buying the Chia Farm, but glad it uses that much less power
SSD was getting cheap for a while, $100/TB quite common... Then supply chain shortages, no doubt crypto farmers part of it
In 2022 we could see quantum as well as the end of supply issues.

Current SSD prices (late august 2021) are still at or under $100 for a SATA 1TB, because those don't have the performance that Chia-farming SSDs require.
So low end SSD's are also cheap in the NVME form factor, like the WD Black SN750 for $120 from newegg or BeastBuy

One big thing to watch with SSDs is the endurance. Some 1TB drives offer a lifetime use of 300 total TB written, others like this WD Black have 600 ttbw as their endurance rating.
The endurance specifications are often related to the length of the warranty but that is not always a reliable measure. * (see below for explanation of endurance language)
Another aspect of NVME drives is whether they contain onboard DRAM.
Models with a little onboard RAM can keep the active table of contents in there, and not have to constantly be writing small files and eating up product life, to put it bluntly.

The SSD Endurance Equation
SSD endurance is commonly described in terms of Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) for a certain warranty period (typically 3 or 5 years). In other words, if a 1TB SSD is specified for 1 DWPD, it can withstand 1TB of data written to it every day for the warranty period. Alternatively, if a 1TB SSD is specified for 10 DWPD, it can withstand 10TB of data written to it every day for the warranty period.
Another metric used for SSD write endurance is Terabytes Written (TBW), which describes how much data can be written to the SSD over the life of the drive.
Converting between TBW and DWPD is simple:
DWPD to TBW: TBW = Capacity(TB) * DWPD * 365 * Warranty(Years)
TBW to DWPD: DWPD = TBW / (365 * Warranty(Years) * Capacity(TB) )

Slightly off topic, but how often are people backing up and replacing old HDs?
I have same question. Have lost HDDs with TBs on them, I want to use Cloud storage.
Curious what others may think of Cloud. At least the music could not be lost.

A good fire at the cloud server farm might change one’s mind about the likelihood of losing data in the cloud.
I usually will replace my HD every 3 years or so simply because I needed a larger one.
Seems like most sizes of external HD are about $20 per TB lately, except for the smallest and largest size of a particular model.
Remember to keep a relatively recent copy at a site other than your home.

Cloud storage probably works great until you stop paying for it (or the host goes bankrupt), and then it disappears.
Might be a useful part of a three-pronged backup system, but I certainly would not suggest putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.
I find cloud hosting most useful for sharing, not for storage as such.
