Title: DIY Bogen-esque thread adapters..
Post by: Nick in Edinboro on June 11, 2003, 04:54:45 PM
Call me cheap but there has to be a way :)  I don't feel like ordering a $1 part and paying $8 shipping!

Anyone make their own or know why this seems so ellusive?  You'd think there is probably something screaming to be used for this at the local Home Depot!

Is the threading wierd or something?

I'm even thinking about going out on a limb and tack welding a 1/4" nut to a 5/8" bolt.. That I'd think would work but I'm not sure on the thread I want.

Just a thought, I'll probably end up buckling and seeing what the local camera store has..  ::)

A lot of the mounting gear we buy online can be ordered easily enough through a local camera/audio retailer (stands, shockmounts, thread adapters, etc.).

You often pay more for the item at a local retailer vs. online, but shipping is free.  Often, it's cheaper to pay more at a local retailer and get free shipping to the store than it is to buy online and pay shipping to your home/work.

I used to scavenge around HD and similar places for stuff like this.  Then I realized I was wasting soooooo much time trying to find stuff they likely didn't have.  So no more of that for me - spend a couple bucks here or there to save the time and hassle.

So...I think you have it right - head to your local camera shop.

Nick,

I've tried very hard to do this myself, only a waste of time.  I checked a few hardware stores locally and never found a sensible way to do this.

I agree, the local camera store would likely have something to piece together.

Keep us posted. :)

I have one on top of my stand I don't use since I generally just clamp to my own stand.  PM me and I can send it to you I suppose!

Daryan, thanks much, check your PM's..!

In other news.. it's a metric thread or what?  I was talking to my dad last night who's much more competent in the ways of mechanics.  Told him the bottom was a 1/4-20 which he knew right away as meaning course thread and then showed him a mic stand (which I used for my ol' AT822 back in 'da day) and he said that's a 5/8-27 fine thread.

There could easily be something we didn't think of or are missing but he seemed to think he could whip something out with ease while at work.  I'm gonna have him persue it, maybe buy a few nuts and bolts and make a handful.  If they work I'll pass them out here for thanks to all the feedback, answered questions, etc!  :D

Agreed, just buy a clamp & you don't have to worry about a thread adapter ...

If anyone wondered what ever happened to this idea.  I did forge ahead with a successful DIY project.

First I was kicking around the idea of making some sort of nut & bolt thread adapter myself but it proved too much of a pain to tack weld small bolts together..  Instead I made a new middle part (the silver part) and tapped the center hole at 1/4-20 (course thread).

Works like a champ :)  Might be a little too much work if ya ain't got the stuff laying around I guess... I have some pic's on my home PC if ya wanna see.. I made my middle section outta some black metal so now it looks "custom".  Heh.. ;)

I dunno if you could do something like this without having a nice shop at your service :)  Luckily my dad's a maintenance guy at a local manufacturing plant so I can sneak in at times!

How do ya like that salmon colored carpet in my room ::)
