Recommendation for good deal on 2 tb drive?
« on: September 13, 2018, 07:59:02 PM »
Reliable and hopefully cheap. My Passport is doing weird stuff but it's three years old. I do have Backblaze but don't want to have to screw with recovery. Thanks!

I shop by price / size and I'm noticing that the best deals on that metric are the 4 TB and 8 TB external drives.

The bargain basement price is $20/TB.

4 TB for $80 external drive is a great deal.
8 TB for $160 external drive is a great deal.

I recently got an email from Newegg, I think, offering a Toshiba 1 TB external for $40. The case always costs something to manufacture, so they want to recoup that.

I prefer WD or HGST, since I had some trouble with some Seagates around 2009-2010.

Only drive of mine that ever died (so far!) was a Seagate, so I tend to stay away from them. Though sometimes it's hard when you see them at Costco.

WD/HGST or Toshiba. HGST is part of WD.

That's interesting about the Seagates. My brother and I came to the same conclusion independently, and now I'm reading the same thing from people here.

I tend to stick with WD. Although the hard drive in my daughter's laptop died, and it was a WD.

I used to have a Toshiba USB 3.0 external. The case died on me (wouldn't power up). I cracked the case open, and the drive was fine. After that, I switched to a WD Passport and it is performing well (knock on wood).
