Portable phantom power supply for Audio-Technica BP4025
« on: February 28, 2022, 05:21:52 PM »
Hello,
I want to connect the Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone to Sony a7R's microphone jack without a dedicated recorder.
This microphone requires phantom power, so I'm looking for a portable phantom power supply.

I found the Denecke PS-2, but the output cable is not 3.5mm so I need a conversion adapter cable. Is it safe to modify by myself?
Or, is there a portable phantom power supply that you can recommend?
I would really appreciate your advice.

Yes as long as you have the soldering skills, it's perfectly fine to put on a 3.5mm plug.

I use this for a different application, but it would work for yours:

I would suggest considering picking up something like a Tascam DR60. B & H has for $199 or I'm sure there are plenty of used ones out there. It's a standalone recorder, but provides phantom, has assignable camera outs via 3.5", plus you have 3.5" inputs should you ever need two more tracks. Runs forever on a USB battery.

I've done a ton of video where I had my mics on the XLR inputs, SBD on the 1/8" in, and send an on-the-fly matrix out to my video camera.

I agree with LSD, the preamps in your camera are guaranteed to be much worse in quality than the Zoom recorder. I would spend the money on a dedicated recorder with XLR for the preamp quality alone.

You might also consider a Sound Devices MixPre (the 2 channel mixer, not the current recorders) or Shure FP-24. It's not much larger than the PS-2, runs on AA batteries, provides phantom, and has good preamps. Its 1/8" tape out will easily feed your A7R. A used one will cost a bit more than the PS-2, but the Mixpre is far more versatile.

Thanks. I'm considering the Zoom F3.  :)
