Avantone SSM shockmount - NEW item
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:36:37 AM »
Anybody have these?  They're on eBay for about $50.00/pair shipped.  Look pretty low profile, compared to the AT8415.  Never seen these before, until I stumbled upon them.  I might pick up a set.  What do you guys think?  Metal construction, like the AT8415.

Hmm.... Says they fit AKG 460... Should probably fit my 480s.  My sabra-soms can be a pain in the ass some times.  If you get them post how you like them. :-}

I've used them twice with the 480s.  They work well, but I don't like how slim they are...that's just my opinion.  I don't like brushing or scraping the body of my mics on ANYTHING, and I did that both times I used them.  I use the ATs and am REALLY careful about the bodies.

I keep thinking about switching to the ATs but got enough sabra-soms for 4 mics a year or ago off ebay for $50.  It is sort of a pain to wrap the bands but they don't wear on the mics bodies and are well made and pretty configurable on the shure vert bar.  Also when taken apart they take almost no space in the bag.  Maybe I will just stick with them.

those look exactly like the superlux mounts which you can get for $6 each

Unless those are all metal or something, it's a rip off.

I will recomend AAAudio.  I have purchased from them before and service was AWESOME.

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

I purchased a pair of them from AAAudio.  I also got my Superlux mics from them and they are a great company, no worries buying from them.  The shock mounts are awesome...but the only other ones I ever used were the Superlux ones that came with them.  They'd losen up a bit and the rubber bands would easily come off the mounts if you put more than 2 per side.  The SSM ones are great and once you tighten them up, they aren't going anywhere.  I still tape my cables off to give more slack, but even if I didn't I doubt they'd change their angle at all.  They're VERY HEAVY though, on a stand that's no biggie but if you are clampin on or anytihg you'd better have a tight connection.  If you put all 4 shock absorbers/rubber bands on the mic isn't moving anywhere...but I find the top one will sometimes come off.  Might just be a problem on one of mine and weaving them in better might help.  For the money, I think they're great...but don't have much of a library of experience to reference.

***edit***
Saw the other post about mics rubbing...if you're mics have a diameter larger than a roll of pennies, I could see where there could be problems.  For the Superlux ones I have there is NO WAY the mics will ever rub or touch the sides...even during an earthquake :)

On the left are the SSM metal mounts, the right has the Superlux plastic mounts.  Note the Superlux ones not having the support in the middle...I think this might cause the mics to tilt foward or backwards a bit coupled with the plastic connectors.  The SSM ones "balance" the mics better and aren't cheap plastic that loosen and can break.  Also notice the pattern of the shock absorbers/rubber bands and how much tighter they are to better steady your mics.  CD provided for size estimates.

Here's a closeup of an SSM mount with a quarter on it for size reference so you can compare to your mics.

23mm mics are a tight fit, but they will go in. Smaller mics fit easily. They're heavy-duty, and nicely made. I put a little nose grease on the rubber before I slid them it, and that helped. If you're careful, you shouldn't touch the metal at all. Overall, I can't imagine how you could make them better. Whether they do the job in the most extreme situation, I don't know--more space for the  suspension would theoretically provide more isolation. But it is nice having something so compact. Like the others mentioned, dealing with aaudio was completely smooth.
