Would this work: mics > PS-2 > AD-500 > recorder?
« on: July 31, 2006, 01:26:03 PM »
I am trying to put together a second rig for Camp Bisco and I am wondering if MG m270> PS-2 > AD-500 > JB3 would work.  In other words, would the AD-500 provide enough gain w/out having a Pre in front of it?  I only ran the AD-500 a few times, and always w/ a Pre.  I have the manual, and I think this will work - but I could not find sources on archive.org that list this combo so I am not so sure.  Any help would be appreciated.  Cheers, ingsy

My recollection with mbhos was "not quite" -- i.e. with the ad500 gain cranked, we'd see levels averaging around -12db.  A pair of line transformers between the ps2 and ad500 should make things work great.

I'll second the not quite.  I sold my old 500e to my little brother, and he was running akg391>ps2>500e.  We couldn't get enough gain out of it w/out line transformers.  You might try turning the 500e mini-cal pots all the way up and see if you can get enough gain...it's all going to depend on your mics.  For quieter acoustic type shows it's definitely not going to be enough gain.

nice...thanks for the tip on the cal pots - i do have the 500e version.  i am going to get a pair of those line transformers any way though...i think they are fairly cheap.
