So I'm soon to be running a CA-9100 > MT2 and from all my readings and discussions have concluded that the 3.5 mm to dual mono 1/4" TS cable that I bought won't work. I'm told that what I need is a 3.5mm to TR cable.
Can I mod the cable that I bought? Anyone know of any inexpensive ways to build or purchase such a cable?

You need a 3.5 stereo to dual 1/4" TRS Stereo. I found a 1/8" Stereo to dual RCA stereo, and then bought 2x RCA>TRS stereo adapters:

Thanks for the input. Why would I want to have dual stereo outputs? Wouldn't you want to send seperate L & R mono channels?
Besides, would really like one basic cable...something less bulky.

Male jacks are either:
TS (tip & sleeve)
or
TRS (tip, RING, sleeve)
So, TS and TR are the same.. you don't get the RING without the slleve below it to make it..
Not all TRS jacks are stereo, this is also a way to balance a cable...
Now the question is can your recorder take unbalanced in? Probably yes, if so you may have the correct cable now.. Time to get the manual out....

there are several members who make custom cables. look in the retail section and post in the yardsale. Also, I remember seeing in some of the MT related threads members have posted pictures of custom low profile cable assemblies for the MT

ted, i have one here with a molded RA mini and switchcraft 1/4" ends that someone ordered and then bailed. how about $25 plus shipping. they do come with a lifetime warranty, btw.

To expand on what bugg100 said, I'm virtually sure that you already have the perfect cable for your purposes even though the manual does specify TRS. I know the cable I've used with great success with the MT 24/96 has dual mono TS plugs because there is only 1 band on each plug, not 2.
Why don't you make a quick test recording something from your home stereo and find out?
I'm sure you've already found out the when you input an unbalanced source to the MT2's line in, you must set the MT2's record level to the minimum possible and get all your gain from the ST-9100. Otherwise you will get the dreaded "sprinkler noise" on your recording.

Thanks to everyone! Haven't gotten the 9100 in yet, just anticipating it's arrival and wanting to be sure that when it comes in, I'll have the right cabling to run. Was just worried from reading info on M-Audio's knowledge base on their website that a TS cable could, in some way damage my gear. I am assuming that's only the case if running with 48v phantom power on. Will hold off on picking up a new cable for now.

i was told once that trs allows for phantom to pass where ts does not
thats why for a mt you want trs (assuming you use mics that need phantom)
of course in this case you don't so a ts should work just as good
correct???
