Title: Bit torrent network help?
Post by: philR on November 11, 2003, 02:26:32 PM
i'm not sure if this is actually possible or not, but it'd be sweet if it is and someone can help me out.  we have three computers using a cable modem with a netgear router.  i'd like to be able to use bit torrent on all three computers if possible, but i haven't been able to figure it out.  we have one computer that will get a green light using shadow's client, but the other two stay on yellow for the whole download.  any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you have to route the correct ports to the correct machine, or it will not see the torrent correctly.  Let me know if you need any more help with this

one thing you might try - is splitting the range up. you are supposed to open 6881-6889, and with a standard netgear router, you can only forward them to one IP. so what i have tried at home is routing 6881-6884 to my desktop and 6885-6889 to my laptop.  i see a mix of green and yellow lights on both, and haven't been able to do any type of scientific testing, but the speeds seem comparable to when only one computer has ports open. neither shows up in parenthesis (firewalled) on bt.etree.org.

ok, not only do you have to change the ports that the router forwards to, but you also have to change the ports that you Bit Torrent Client uses.  This can be done in Shadow's Client by clicking on preferences and then changing the port numbers to the corrosponding numbers that each computer has forwarded to it.  Sorry if that was only more confusing :(
