transferred MD files play fast
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:04:11 PM »
So I finally got around to transferring some old recordings that I made with my MD recorder (MZS-R5ST).  I went optical out of the MD deck and into the my IHP120.  Since these are non-HiMD files I had to transfer them in real time, so the 15-20 discs took quite a while.  When I checked them out, I discovered that all but two of the files play back at a fast speed.  I figure that I can try and tinker with them in Sony Vegas or Audacity (both have a play-rate adjustment feature), but I'm wondering why this even happened. I've transferred a few other MDs in the past using the same optical method and, up to now, haven't had a single problem.
Anyone else ever have this come up?  All the recordings were made at the highest quality setting on the MD.  I attempted playback in Winamp, Vegas and Audacity and the affected files played fast on each of the players.

Thanks a lot.

Perhaps the HP-120 recorded the files at a different sample rate?  When you open the files in your editor are the files showing up as 16bit/44.1khz (or something similar)?

So I just checked out the sampling rates of the files that play too fast and they are all 16 bit and 64 KhZ.  The ones that play correctly are 16 bit and 44.1 KhZ.  My version of rockbox keeps the frequency rate the "same as source" when going digital in (can't set a manual value), so the problem might be with my md unit.  I just looked through the MD user manual and apparently it does have a sample rate converter, but it doesn't explain whether it is manually adjustable or not.  I'm going to have to poke around some more.
Thanks for the lead, audball.

I haven't owned an HP-120 but have read that the unit must be off before connected to the receiving signal or else it sets its clock at 16/64 instead of synching to the signal (in your case, 16/44.1).

Open the "fast" files in your editor and change the properties from 16/64 to 16/44.1 without resampling the files (two different things).  That should fix the problem.

That did it.  So simple....so effective.

Thanks a lot for the fix, audball!
