cpu dead? or something else
« on: March 28, 2004, 08:23:57 PM »
hey, I was tooling around with my computer this weekend, and now whenever I push the power button the cpu fan spends for a second and then nothing.  I accidentially put the ram in the wrong way, so I flipped them.  Did i damage it?  Is this the issue?  It doesnt even make the startup beep.

it's possible you damaged it but i would say that is not likely.  I would recommend ripping everything out and starting w/ cpu and ram to see if you can get it to make the POST beep.  then begin to add cards/drives one by one.

unless your running a ancient 386/486 with SIMMS, it's impossible to install RAM backwards.
even with SIMMS it would be a severe challenge to do so

I seriously doubt it was the wattage.  Unless you're running an Athlon 64 with 15000 rpm hard drives and the latest video card, 300 watts is enough.

i dunno man, a cheap 300w ps just wont work with some stuff.  I had to go to a 400w anatec to get my p4 1.6 going with 2 hd's and they were just 7200 rpm drives.

Adding an extra stick of RAM won't put you over the brink though. Its possible something bad happened when they were installed backwards...
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

HOW oh HOW can you even come remotly close to installing ram backwards?  its physically impossible.  You would either a. ruin the ram stick or 2. ruin your mb.   I am thinking it was never a ram problem in the beginning.  most likely a powersupply problem.  Cheap powersupplys can kill a computer under any circumstances.  I always try to stick with a name brand, and something recommended by the mb company and/or the chip company...

Easy. If you don't pay close enough attention it can appear that the DIMM is installed while its really backwards & partially in the socket.

I never said it was totally in the socket, nor did he. Besides, he's cooking his processor.

Of course a cheap power supply won't work.  That's my whole point... cheap.  I doubt you needed a 400w but it's always nice to have the extra headroom :D

Besides, he's cooking his processor.
